Mr. Garza: Confirming and expanding our telephone conversation with Mr. Francisco Luyando with CD Builders this morning. CD Builders is excavating less than one (1) foot behind the currently constructed gabion baskets. In lieu of compaction of on site fill material we recommend they substitute size 57 gravel or clean pea gravel behind the baskets with less than one (1) foot width of excavation. This assumes the material beyond one (1) foot behind the gabion baskets is natural soils, has not been disturbed and is not existing fill material. If the material beyond one (1) foot behind the back side of the gabion wall basket has been disturbed, is not natural material or is existing fill material it will require excavation and replacement in thin horizontal lifts under controlled conditions and density tests performed. The top row of gabions shall still utilize on site materials as backfill, placed in thin tested horizontal lifts and trimmed to the required shape. All existing plans and specifications remain valid. Safety and trench shoring is the responsibilty of CD Builders. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. 1 GEE Consultants, Inc. Richard W. Gee, P.E. President 2
