GENERAL NOTES & RECOMMENDATIONS
The strength of structural lightweight mix designs is valid provided strength specimens are taken at
the point of placement and are air cured in accordance with ASTM Test Method C 567-05, section
7.3 except as modified in section 8.1, alternative method, ASTM Specification C 330-05. The
strength performance of structural lightweight mixes is designed on the basis of cementitious content.
Water to cementitious ratio requirements are not applicable for this type of concrete. The use of air
entraining in lightweight concrete is necessary in order to achieve the desired unit weight and to
enhance pumpability. This shall be considered a Condition of Sale.
Unless otherwise indicated, when the concrete temperature at point of placement exceeds 90 degrees
Fahrenheit, TXI will guarantee the strength performance of the mix design(s) herein submitted up to a
maximum placement temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit using an ASTM C 494 Type D retarding
water-reducer, or a minimum of 20 % replacement of fly ash in combination with an ASTM C 494
Type A conventional water-reducer, as long as the concrete is placed within 75 minutes from batch
time. Unless otherwise indicated, strength of plain concrete guaranteed up to a maximum placement
temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Based on current market conditions, TXI does not guarantee a single source of cement, fly ash or
aggregates for any project except by special advance arrangement.
TXI does not guarantee the color uniformity of ready mix concrete due to: normal color variation in
cement and aggregates, normal slump variation, or other conditions such as weather, placement,
consolidation, curing, leakage or variations in form texture, or surface treatments.
The aggregates and cements native to this region may contain trace amounts of iron which, while not
visible to the naked eye, may become noticeable in the concrete through oxidation.
The cement in use meets both Type I and Type II requirements of ASTM C150 for Low Alkali
Portland Cement.
These mix designs may contain a high volume of fly ash. Please note that the contractor and testing
laboratory are responsible for ensuring the proper initial curing environment for the specimens and
the cylinders should NOT be transported to the laboratory prior to 48 hours after casting.
These mix designs may be considered "High-Strength Concrete", which is concrete with required
strengths of 6000 psi and greater. All high-strength mixes are designed to contain an ASTM C 494
Type F high range water reducer and a minimum fly ash replacement factor of 20%. Please ensure
that all samples are obtained from the point of placement. The contractor and testing laboratory are
responsible for ensuring the proper initial curing environment for the specimens between 68-78
degrees F. The minimum load size for high strength concrete is 4 cubic yards.
These mix designs may be considered "High-Early Strength". Test specimens used for in-place early
strength determination should be cured in a manner as close as possible to the in-place concrete.
Utilization of insulated blankets is highly recommended. The hydration process of Portland cement is
a temperature sensitive chemical reaction, in-place concrete generally develops and maintains
substantially more heat than cylinders. We suggest a maturity monitoring system such as the
intelliRock system or equal for the most accurate estimation of in-place strength instead of cylinders.
Cylinders for 28 day acceptance strength should be cured in strict accordance with ASTM C 31.

Allowable water, not to exceed the maximum water to cementitious ratio, which may be added to the
concrete is identified on the delivery ticket. This will indicate the water withheld from the batch.
Water added in excess of this amount will reduce the concrete strength and will be at the customer's
risk. Maximum specified slump may not be exceeded regardless of the amount of water withheld.
Unless otherwise prearranged, specialty non-standard testing on all concrete and/or constituent
materials (aggregates) is the contractor's (buyer) responsibility and will be arranged and paid for by
the contractor. This includes but is not limited to drying shrinkage, solar reflectivity index, chloride
ion, slump loss curve, 3 point water to cementitious ratio curve, etc.
TXI is not responsible for deficient testing of the fresh and hardened concrete specimens. When a low
strength result is reported, and the applicable ASTM standards were not strictly followed: First, TXI
will conduct an investigation of the production records to verify compliance and delivery ticket to
determine if water was added and to verify that the concrete was placed within the allowed time
frame. Second TXI may conduct an in-place evaluation of the compressive strength of the concrete in
Standard Test Method for Rebound Number of Hardened Concrete
question in accordance with the
(ASTM C-805). If the concrete specimens were not tested in accordance to the applicable ASTM
Standards, the contractor (buyer) may contract the services for coring and testing of cores at its own
expense.
The minimum load size for concrete containing pigments and/or ASTM C 494 Type F high range
water reducers as constituent components is 4 cubic yards.
Concrete mixes containing a plant added ASTM C 494 Type F high range water reducer (HRWR) are
designed to be batched at a slump of 3" to 4" prior to the addition of the HRWR. The target delivery
slump at the jobsite is 8" to 10". The acceptance slump at the jobsite is 8.0" +/- 2.0". In the event the
concrete arrives to the jobsite with a slump of less than 8.0", a minimum amount of water or a
fraction of the original dosage of HRWR may be added to increase the slump to an acceptable level.
Concrete must not be ordered with a delivery slump of less than 8.0 inches.
TXI performs two seasonal changes of admixtures. In late Spring ASTM C 494 Type A water
reducing admixtures are adjusted by increasing the dosage rate, by substituting for another Type A
more adequate for warmer temperatures or by substituting it for a Type D water reducing and
retarding admixture. In early Fall, Type A and D admixtures are switched back to Type A admixtures
for the cool weather season.
The addition of any additives not supplied by TXI, including but not limited to pigments, fibers,
water proofers and/or water repellents admixtures, foaming agents, air entrainers and others, voids
the warranty of the performance of the concrete. The concrete must be tested prior to the addition of
any additives for the strength warranty to be valid. The contractor is responsible for determining the
effects such additives have on the fresh and hardened concrete.
We are enclosing all available back up data for the referenced mix design(s). If the strength
information is not available, or is insufficient, confirmation tests may have to be conducted by
your laboratory.

Pumping Recommendations for Concrete:
1.5" minimum diameter lines with no reduction to smaller lines.
2.Keep rubber hose to absolute minimum length and plan pipe with as few 90 degree angles as
possible.
3.Samples for slump and strength tests should be taken at discharge end of hose for strength
guarantee to be valid.
4.To prime pump lines, a minimum of 8.0 sack grout is recommended for lubrication. In the case of
strength concrete, equivalent strength grout should be used if the grout remains in the placement.
5.Pump mixes are based on minimum cement content pumped at ground level. As pump line
increases in length or height and/or layout configuration changes, mix design modifications may be
required to assure strength and pumpability at additional cost to the contractor.
6.TXI cannot control, and is therefore not responsible for excessive loss of entrained air content
when loss occurs as a result of boom configuration or free fall discharge from hose. To ensure
minimum air loss when pumping, maintain a continuous flow of concrete through the entire length of
pipe and do not subject concrete to free fall.
7.The term "pumpable concrete" refers to concrete which is capable of being transported through an
apparatus which forces concrete to the placing position through a pipeline or hose as long as the
recommendations indicated above are followed. The term "pumpable concrete" does not relate to
concrete proportioned in a particular manner or containing a specific type of product.
