is little consolation. I have been driving that intersection for a very
long time under all conditions (dry, wet, snow and ice packed), and I
have never felt the bricks were unsafe. If they were, I would think
this project would have happened long ago. At the very least, the
contractor should have closed and opened the road in sections between
10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., until the project was complete. In the end, I
think this was for aesthetics and “branding” more than anything, and now
we have to pay a contractor a bonus to do the work in a timely manner,
which should have been the objective all along.

Mrs. Neel,
I am the designer and project manager for the Belt Line and MacArthur
rehab project. The main purpose for the reconstruction of the
intersection is to replace the brick pavers. During even a light rain
the bricks were slick. Essentially they had a lower coefficient of
friction than the surrounding concrete and drivers were unaware and took
turns through the intersection at unsafe speeds for the conditions.
There were many crashes directly related to this issue at this
intersection.
While we could have just replaced the intersection with plain concrete,
the City of Coppell prides itself in its image. We want drivers to know
they are in the City of Coppell therefore we have installed a decorative
star in the intersection. Many people are unaware that the star pattern
is actually concrete that has an integral color and stamped with a brick
pattern before it cures. This is the third intersection we have done in
this manner. The star ties into our City logo which has three stars
representing the two former names and the current name of the City.
I am pleased to share with you the fact our contractor is ahead of
schedule. Though we have allowed him the ability to close the road for
30 days we will give him a $45,000 bonus if he completes in 15 days. We
are looking at opening the road either this Saturday or Sunday. Which
puts him at either 13 or 14 days.

To the Mayor and City Council of Coppell:
I am trying to write this email with composure and
diplomacy, but YOU make it very difficult. There is an old saying, “if
it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Apparently none of you have heard that
one before, but it’s been around a long time and stands true to this
day. The intersection at Beltline and MacArthur was not broken, yet you
felt the need to spend money and fix it anyway. I hope each and every
one of you have to pass through that intersection during the morning and
evening rush hours, so you have some sense of what you are putting us
through for absolutely no reason. Commutes into and out of Dallas are
hard enough, and 24 years ago we chose Coppell based on its convenient
proximity to Love Field (where both my husband and I work). There are
other routes, but we shouldn’t have to look for them.
Please know that I do not appreciate local elected
officials squandering my money and making my life more complicated
(Washington does that enough).
