FW: Sandy Lake BridgeRick,
Please note the attached drawing and comments below.
* Rail alignment
* The original intent was for the sidewalk rail to match the
alignment of the rail on the bridge. However due to the constructed
located of the modular block wall (wall batter, overall wall location,
etc…), the alignment now requires adjustment.
* In order to accommodate the necessary alignment modification
it was determined that the depth of the large pilaster noted on Sheet 86
of the plans could be adjusted to match the 1’-4” depth of the small
pilaster. The width of the large rail should remain as proposed so as to
maintain the theme of the original design concept.
* The Pilaster type/pattern is indicated on the attached
exhibit.
* Trail Alignment
* The overall trail alignment should be adjusted to reflect the
as-built location of the wall. In doing so it is presumed that the
sidewalk/trail will now abut the back of curb which will eliminate the
small landscape/grass section between the trial and back of curb
(4.0’±). As such the sidewalk/trail should be installed per City
standards with respect to the sidewalk abutting the curb.
* Based on the trail revision noted above it also our
understanding that the contractor will relocate existing irrigation
infrastructure (wiring, meter, etc..) which had been installed in this
area to the median.
* A ¾” expansion joint between the trail pavement and the top
of the block wall should be provided.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks
Chris

Rick
Thanks for following up. Yes documentation is always a good idea.
I sent Keith an initial response (prior to meeting in the field) last
week. See attached e-mail from 10/08.
I’ll compare notes with Delvin and provide a response per our
discussion/direction in the field.

Chris are you going to send us a drawing or a written description of
what we want to do with the rails and trail section so we can give it to
the bridge contractor so he can proceed? I know we talked about it
onsite but he wants documentation. Thx

Keith,
As follow up to our meeting on site last week and e-mail below I
offer the following comments:
1. Potential Movement
a. The contractor should honor both the existing expansion
joints in the bridge/abutment (e/w).
b. The contractor shall provide adequate reinforcing and
control joints as required per City standard details.
c. A control joint should be provided at the end of the
bridge approach slabs/ roadway pavement tie-in where the section of
median patterned pavement is located on both the bridge deck and soil
section.
FYI per City Standard Detail 2130, the median pavement is shown
to be doweled into the back of curb with #4 X12 “ @ 18” O.C.
2. Pay Item
a. The following sheets reference the median pavement
* Sheet 03 Typical Sections – contains the
following note for the bridge section “stamped concrete” in reference to
the median pavement.
* Sheet 69 Typical Bridge Section & Details
– contains following note “SEE LANDSCAPE PLANS FOR DETAILS” in reference
to median treatment on the bridge.
* Sheet 85 Miscellaneous Slab Details –
contains following note “SEE LANDSCAPE PLANS” in reference to median
treatment on the bridge.
* Sheet 116 Landscape Plan 65+50 – 69+50
provides specific details/quantities for the median pavement design
(±1929 sf).
b. All of the landscape elements for this project were bid
lump sum (LS). Other than the references previously noted, the details
for this work were provided on the Landscape sheets and should have been
accounted for as such in the contractors pricing for the project.
Please let me know if you need any additional information
regarding this issue.

Gentlemen,
We met with Tiseo and their bridge subcontractor today to
discuss several issues regarding the bridge. One issue that they are
concerned about is the decorative paving in the median. Some of their
concerns are:
1. The potential movement of the bridge from flexing
or expansion/contraction damaging the multiple pieces of different
concrete called for in the plan.
2. There does not appear to be a pay item in the
project for this decorative concrete.
Any thoughts on either of these issues?
Thanks.
