RE: Sidewalk and Rail (2)All
The original intent was for the rail to be constructed on a thickened
trail paving which was to be poured against a ¾” expansion joint at the
modular block wall as shown in section J and sheet 87.
When I observed the modular block wall as constructed, it appears to me
that the top layer or two of modular blocks need to be removed and the
edge of the trail section cast on top of the modular block wall. There
is a problem in supporting the outside formwork if this needs to done.
Following are some ideas that I have had to possibly solve this problem.
It appeared to me that the outside edge of the trail paving can be
offset enough from the face of the modular blocks to vertically hold the
formwork and small angle clips could be attached to the top of the
modular blocks to horizontally restrain the bottom of the form. The
form would also require supports spanning over the top of the trail at
some interval. Form ties could also be inserted in both the outside and
pavement side of the trail forms and connected together with wire to
provide lateral support.

Keith,
We will review and provide comments.
Also, I wanted to provide an updated on the gabion walls at the bridge.
We have processed the survey data that we captured last week and are
currently working on proposed solutions/modifications. I expect to be
ready to meet with you later this week to present our plan. I’ll be in
touch to schedule a meeting once I have a better feel on timing.
Delvin/Keith – Can you assist with the questions below regarding the
bridge rail and sidewalks?
Thanks
Chris

Royce,
Iowa bridge requests more information about the rail on the south west
end of our project not on the bridge. Please confirm the size and
spacing of pilasters. Please confirm the alignment of the rail. Please
confirm that the back of the sidewalk will pour against the block
retaining wall with a ¾” expansion joint.
