RE: Street Light - Drilled Shaft Foundation Design depths for Freeport Parkway and Sandy LakeKeith/George,
Please note the revised foundation detail attached to this e-mail.
Based on our calculations, the overall depth of the foundations should
be increased from 6’ (as noted in the original plan set) to 10’. As such
the total amount of steel reinforcing should also be increased. We did
develop a solution which would salvage the existing cages and allow for
lapping of the extension and additional reinforcing steel.
Additionally, after visiting with Robert it’s my understanding that the
bolt pattern is still unresolved. As this detail needs to be resolved
soon please let us know how we can assist further.
Please review and let me know if you need a sealed drawing/narrative to
issue to the contractor(s) or have any further questions.

George,
In support of your Option A to use the 24” foundation, I asked Keith
Burkholder, our structural lead, to perform the analysis for the light
pole foundations on Freeport Parkway and Sandy Lake using our available
Geotech data. It resulted in a 16’ depth for a heavier 24” foundation
as defined below. As you can see, he also included what might be
expected in terms of cost at $1,146 per foundation using TxDOT Dallas’s
average bid experience. Let me know if have questions.
Thanks,
Robert

Robert, using the TxDOT average bid price index for the Dallas District
the unit price for a 24” D.S. is $71.57/ LF x 16 Ft. length = $1,146
per light pole foundation.

Robert, I finished the design for a 24” diameter straight sided drilled
shaft foundation to support the proposed typical 35’ tall double armed
street light pole and came up with a drilled shaft embedment depth of 16
ft. into the existing grade and reinforced with 8- #7 bars with #3
spiral ties with a 6” pitch, one flat turn top & bottom. Let me know how
you want to present this design to the City, in regards to a sketch or
by notes. Also, let me know if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,

Keith, I am requesting your assistance in determining the subject
depths that will be needed. Since our early discussions, George has
recently expressed desire to stay with the 24” piers. We will be
providing a transformer base, 35’ poles and two - 8’ arms with 2 - 25
to 35 # fixtures on them.
I will bring you the boring data from the bridge areas that we looked
at previously. Let me know if more data is needed.
If possible I need the design depth early next week. Let me know if
that is not possible. You may charge to CPL14191 – Task 2.
Thanks for your help.
