RE: Sandy Lake Road Project ST 93-02
MacArthur/Sandy Lake Road Closure
For some time know we have been discussing with the contractor for Sandy Lake Road the possibility of
closing the MacArthur/Sandy Lake intersection over a weekend to lower the entire section to the correct
grade. Not only would this provide a quicker construction, but also it would provide a much safer
construction. Under the current construction scenario, motorists are driving adjacent to a shear drop-off
where contractors are working on the new roadway. There are also numerous barricades in the
intersection directing traffic in all directions.
At our last meeting with the contractor, we agreed on the weekends of August 10 - 12, 2001 and August
17 - 19, 2001 to entirely close down the MacArthur/Sandy Lake intersection for reconstruction.
The first weekend the contractor, if he chooses, will start Friday evening, closing down the intersection
and lowering it to grade. He then would undercut the intersection and install cement treated base. This
base material would be approximately 8" lower than the surrounding street. He would then seal the base
material and provide ramps from the surrounding streets to the new cement treated base and open the
intersection back up prior to Monday morning. Traffic would drive on this treated base for one week.
During the second weekend, the contractor would close the intersection again and begin to install his
reinforcing steel. Saturday afternoon the contractor would pour high early-strength concrete over the
intersection. The high early-strength concrete typically reaches its design strength within 24 hours.
Concrete cylinders would be tested on Sunday afternoon so the road could be opened up to traffic by
Monday morning.
During the week leading up to the road closure, we will be utilizing 2 message boards at the intersection
alerting motorist of the impending closure of the intersection for the weekend. Information will also be
provided on the Webpage and Channel 19. I have also discussed with Sharon the possibility of a
Citywide mail-out ~lerting residents of the closure of the intersection for the two weekends. Again, the
construction of the intersection in this manner will provide for a safer and more expedient construction.
If you have any questions I will be happy to discuss them with you. If not, we will proceed with this plan.
