As a general rule I try to keep them at 10% or less when we reconstruct a road. Of course this is usually a situation where we have multiple grade breaks and an existing homeowner. There may be some requirements in the Building Code that address driveway slopes. You may want to check with Michael Arellano in our Building Inspections department before finalizing your plans. With these short driveways at the back of the townhomes that connect to the alleys, what is the maximum grade allowed for the driveways? I believe the subdivision ordinance references a maximum grade in a subdivision to be 10% but was not clear if that included the driveways. We were planning on limiting our maximum grades to 14%. The driveways are only 6 feet long. Thanks. Mike Glenn, P.E. Glenn Engineering Corp.
