Revised Retaining Wall Designs

Falkofske Engineering, Inc. Job No. 113.93
Dear Mr. Clancy:
As you know we have revised the design of the retaining walls for the above project: The .n. ew
plans and specifications call for clean gravel behind the retaining walls. It is my understanding
that Metroplex Retaining Walls, Inc. has, in some cases, on this project used broken concrete
instead of the gravel as specified. It is my opinion that the broken concrete pieces with fine
sands are an acceptable alternative to the gravel which was specified. The reason for this is
that the broken concrete is more angular in nature and will provide a higher angle of internal
friction than will the gravel. Because of this higher angle of internal friction, the broken
concrete will produce less backf'fll pressure on the retaining walls which is desirable.
Sincerely,
