RE: CORROSION CONTROL DATA, 12-INCH EXPLORER PI
Dear Mr. Morton:
Explorer's 12-inch pipeline in the area of the re-route of the
pipeline for the U. S. Post Office and Royal Lane has cathodic
protection applied from an impressed current cathodic protection
rectifier. The rectifier is located approximately 5.3 pipeline
miles east of the re-route location.
The specified rectifier is located at Explorer's Carrollton,
Texas junction and is applying 2.1 amps of cathodic protection
current to the 12-inch pipeline within which the re-route is
located. For cathodic protection application and isolation, this
specific 12-inch pipeline is 11.6 miles in length (5.3 pipeline
miles east; 6.3 pipeline miles west of the re-route). The cath-
odic protection potential at the re-route area is maintained at an
approximate cathodic protection pipe-to-soil potential of -1.30
volts. There is 0.32 amps of cathodic protection current passing
this location from the 6.3 miles of 12-inch pipeline to the west,
returning to the source of cathodic protection, the impressed cur-
rent rectifier at Explorer's Carrollton, Texas Junction.
Cathodic protection being applied to Explorer's pipelines meets
or exceeds the requirements of the Federal Department of Transpor-
tation, Office of Pipeline Safety Part 195.
The cathodic protection applied to Explorer's 12-inch pipeline
should not cause corrosion interference to existing City of
Coppell buried fuel tank, nor should the tank cause the Explorer
12-inch pipeline any problems. Explorer has or will install suf-
ficient cathodic protection testing facilities to confirm the sta-
tus of its pipeline. The city of Coppell needs testing facilities
installed on their fuel tank for corrosion control testing.
Mr. Steven M. Morton -2- March 1, 1988
Testing facilities on both structures will allow monitoring and
testing following completion of construction; on an annual basis
during routine testing by Explorer; and at any other time as may
be necessary, should changes be made to either structure.
Should you have additional questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to call.
Yours truly,
Samuel L. Irwin
Chief Corrosion Engineer
