GENERAL NOTES
This Trench Safety Plan was prepared under OSHA Subpart P Excavations and
Trenches, 1926.652(b)(4)Option(4) & 1926.652(c)(4)Option(4). The plan deals
with the retention of soil by natural or manmade means. This plan can -not state
the where/haw/when/choice/etc of the contractor's procedures. To do so
would be illegal. The contractor shall seek guidance from the Trench Safety
Engineer when unanticipated solutions are required.
THE FOLLOWING PAGES ARE ALLOWABLE SHORING OPTIONS.
For all excavations of trenches, which will exceed a depth of five feet, the
Contractors trench safety procedures shall meet the current standards established
by OSHA on excavations, trenching, shoring, and confined spaces, all of which are
incorporated herein by reference.
2. These drawings assume all excavated areas remain free of water seepage or
intrusion. Excavations shall be inspected after every storm or other hazard -
increasing occurrence to assure the continued safety of the trench. The Contractor
shall seek guidance from the Trench Safety Engineer where needed.
3. When installing a support system, shoring will be applied by starting at the top of the
trench excavation and working downward. All cross beams, trench jacks, etc., will
be placed in a true horizontal position. Support system removal shall begin at the
bottom and proceed upward, performed from outside the trench.
4. Alternate design for use of steeper slopes of the use of supporting systems, i.e_,
piling, cribbing, shoring, etc., may be submitted by the Contractor for evaluation by
the Trench Safety Engineer.
5. Slopes shown shall be the maximum unless changed by the Trench Safety Engineer
due to changing soil conditions. Slopes shown are for a short-term period. If
excavations are open for more than 24 hours, the Trench Safety Engineer shall be
contacted for evaluation.
6. Cohesive soils are classified by their unconfined compressive strength, as follows:
(psf = pounds per square foot; tons/sq ft = tons per square foot)
Type "A"... more than 3,000 psf (1.5 tons/sq ft)
Type "B more than 1,000 psf (0.5 tons/sq ft) and less than 3,000 psf (1.5 tons/sgft)
Type "C"... less than 1,000 (0.5 tons/sq ft) that is not flowing or submerged.

Trench Box/Shield side wall capacity shall be equal or greater than 280 psf for
Type "B" soil and equal or greater than 400 psf for Type "C" soil. If there are
any changes is soil conditions, the Trench Safety Engineer shall be contacted
for evaluation.
Any manufactured/rated trench shield system, such as Manhole Rings, Modular
Shields, Panel Shields, etc, are included in this catagory.
Trench box capacity refers to sidewall capacity of bottom box when boxes are
stacked. If "closed ends" are required, one acceptable method is by placing
3/4", or greater (or equal substitute) steel plate (width size may vary) against
spreaders of trench box, Other methods may be used with approval of the
