RV10 Rotoraires for pump check service. Rotovalve Controls The two RV10 Rotovalves are complete with water hydraulic cylinders, directional control valves, flow control valves and other necessary controls required to provide th~ specified operation. The hydraulic controls are mounted in free standing panels. The cylinders are constructed in accordance with AWWA C504, The Rotovalve panel mounted controls, one panel per Rotovalve, consist of a 4-way, 2 position solenoid valve used to direct the flow of water to the cylinder to open or close the Rotovalve. The 4-way solenoid valve is of bronze construction and is designed for water service. The 4-Way valve is furnished with manual override so that the Rotovalve may be opened or closed by operating the manual override when the solenoid coil is deenergized. Two normally open 2-way solenoid valves are provided to allow the Rotovalve to close at a faster rate during power failure. Flow control valves are furnished and are sized for an approximate 20 to 240,second normal opening and closing speed and an approximate 10 to 60 second emergency close speed. TIle three solenoid valves are wired to terminals in a junction box inside the panel. Also furnished is a bronze body strainer, and isolation ball valves. The control systems are sized for a minimum supply pressure of 80 PSI and a maximum pressure of 150 PSI water, .o The Rotovalves are each furnished with two double pole double throw limit switches, one mounted at the full open and one mounted at the full close position. An adjustable single pole System Description Rodney Hunt Shop Order 53040-5 Page 2 double throw limit switch is mounted at the 95% close position for pump shut down for each valve. A single pole double throw pressure switch is mounted in the pump side of each Rotovalve to indicate that the pump is up to a designated pressure before allowing the opening of the valve, Additional terminals are provided in the junction box in the control panel for the four switches. Not included: 1. Interconnecting piping and wiring between the Rotovalve and the control panel. 2. Electrical controls or devices not specifically mentioned above. 3. Pressure gauge. Sequence of Operation 1. Pressurized water is used to actuate the Rotovalve. The Rotovalve is factory supplied with pressure supply piping connections to the upstream and downstream waterways of the Rotovalve. The Rotovalve control system is equipped with a 4-way directional control valve, which directs water to the Rotovalve cylinder for normal opening or closing of the Rotovalve. Adjustable flow control valves are supplied to provide independent control of the opening and closing speeds. Flow control settings are made prior to shipment, but may require adjustment under actual service conditions. Normal opening and closing times are adjustable between 60 and' 240 seconds and are factory set for approximately 60 seconds. Two 2-Way directional valves.. are supplied to provide additional flow paths for emergency fast closure of the Rotovalve during a power failure. Emergency fast close speed is adjustable between 10 and 60 seconds and is factory set at approtimately 30 seconds. 2. The Rotovalve is opened by energizing the 4-way solenoid directional valve SV- l, and closed by deenergizing SV~i. With SV-1 solchoir energized pressurized water flows from SV-1 pressure port P to SV-1 port B, pressu~zing the rod end of the cylinder to open the Ro. tovalve. Water in the cap end of the cylinder flows from SV-1 port A to exhaust port E. Opening speed is determined by setting of flow control valve FCV-2. With SV-1 solenoid deenergized pressurized water flows from SV-1 pressure port P to SV-1 port A, pressudzing the cap end of the cylinder to close the Rotovalve. Water in the rod end of the cylinder flows from SV-i port B to exhaust port E. Closing speed is determined by setting of flow control valve FCV-1 .. In the event of an elecU'ical power outage the Rotovalve will automatically close at the speed detirmined by the setting of FCV-3 in conjunction with the setting of FCV-i. During normal operation the 2-Way solenoid dh'ectional valves SV-2 and SV-3 are energized and closed. During emergency fast close operation SV-1, SV-2 and SV-3 are deenergized. Pressurized water flows through SV-I pressure System Description Rodney Hunt Shop Order 53040-5 Page 3 port P to SV-1 port A and SV-2 to the cap end of the cylinder to close the Rotovalve. Exhaust from the rod end of the cylinder flows through SV-1 port B to exhaust port E and SV-3. Motion & Control 27 Flow Control Valves Series F and FS Colorflow Series F and FS Flow Control Valves These valves provide precise control of flow and shutoff in one direction, and automatically permit full flow in the opposite direction. A two-step needle allows fine adjustment at low flow by using the first three turns of the adjusting knob; the n~xt three turns open the valve to full flow, and also provide standard throttling adjustments. The exclusive "Colorflow" color-band reference scale on the valve stem is a great convenience and time-saver in setting the valve originally and in returning it to any previous setting. ' ',1. ,. Dual Stage Switch nar~ General Application Data Class 9012 single stage pressure switches are control circuit rated devices used in pneumatic or hydraulic systems on a wide variety of machine and process applications to protect the equipment and. control or monitor the system pressure.. Pressure Ranges Type G switches are either diaphragm or piston actuated. Diaphragm switches range from 0.2-675 psi falling pressure while piston switches range from 20-9,000 psi falling pressure. All Type G piston switches have sealed pistons and can be used on air, water, oil, or any media compatible with the actuator material (see listing). When switches are required to be factory set and only one setting is identified, specify whether this setting is on increasing or decreasing pressure. Enclosures Open type, NEMA Type 1, NEMA Type 4, 4X, 13 (IEC IP66), and NEMA Type 7 & 9 enclosures are available on Class 9012 devices. Type G industrial switches are available as open type or in NEMA Type 1 enclosures. They are UL Listed and CSA Certified as industrial control equipment. Open type devices in pressure ranges up to 250 psi are available with internal and external threaded Pressure connectors making them ideally suited for panel mounting. Type G machine tool switches have NEMA Type 4, 4X, 13 (IEC IP66) enclosures. These devices'are UL Listed and CSA Certified as . industrial control equipment. They are UL Listed for use in Class li, Division 2, Group G and Class II1 hazardous locations. They are also UL Marine Listed for use on vessels greater than 65 feet long where ignition protection is not required. Type G machine tool switches are also available in NEMA Type 7 & 9 enclosures. These are UL Listed for use in Class I, Divisions I and 2, Groups C and D, and Class II, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups E, F, G hazardous locations. 'Pressure Switches Machine Tool & Industrial General !nformation Class 9012 Bellows vs. Diaphragm The three factors that affect bellows lile are the compatibility of the pressure medium with the bellows and bellows housing material, the amount of pressure change during each operating cycle, and the speed of operation. On wide pressure change applications. the bellows is flexed over a wide portion of the range on each operating cycle causing the metal to fatigue faster than if it flexes over a small portion such as between the operating points only. This will reduce life. The Type G is offered with either diaphragm or piston actuators only - for maximum versatility, speed of operation, and life. Diaphragm life. like bellows life, is alfected by pressure medium compatibility. Standard diaphragms on Class 9012 Type G devices are nitrile (Buna-N) in zinc plated steel llanges. Fluorocarbon (VITON~) and ethylene propylene diaphragms as well as Type 316 stainless steel flanges are aiso available. The elastomer diaphragms used on Class 9012 switches are capable of withstanding high speed cycling and wide pressure changes. Operating speeds up to 200 cycles per minute are not detrimental to the life of the diaphragm.. Surges which exceed the maximum range value may occasionally occur, especially on start-up of the machine (see section on surges). The switch will withstand these occasional surges if they are within the maximum allowable pressure rating ot the switch. However. frequently applying this higher pressure will greatly reduce the life of the switch. Although the diaphragm will withstand wide pressure changes on each operating cycle, the pressure applied to the diaphragm during the normal operating cycle should never exceed the maximum value listed in the "Range" column in the catalog listing. Life will be considerably reduced if regularly cycled above this pressure. If significant surges are common or if pressures are higher than listed in the 'Range' column, consider the use of a piston device. Surges One of the most destructive elements to a pressure switch is hydraulic surges. A surge is a high rate of rise in pressure, normally of short duration, caused by starting a pump or opening and dosing a valve. Extremely high rates of rise in pressure can be damaging even though it is within the limits of the maximum allowable pressure. To limit the effect of surges, the switch should be mounted as close to an accumulator and as lar from the pump or quick acting valve as possible. Type G piston actuated switches are supplied with a .020" pressure orifice to help reduce the effects of minor surges. Type G diaphrEigm actuated switches are supplied with a 0.60~ pressure orifice. A restrictor with a small orifice placed in the line between the switch and pump or valve will further help to protect the switch. Using a surge .~r~ubber such as the Class 9049 Types A26 or A26S will also protect the switch. Vibration Among other things, excessive vibration can cause contact bounce, chatter or premature contact transfer especially when system pressure is near the ope.r_a'~ing point of the switch. Remote mounting of the switch is the best way to avoid problems. Use On Steam Switches should not be applied directly on steam exceeding 15 psig. However. with the installation of a Class 9049 Type A7A steam capillary tubing kit between the pressure and the switch, steam pressure up to 250 psig may be applied provided this does not exceed the maximum allowable pressure rating of the switch or the maximum temperature rating at the actuator. Piston vs. Diaphragm Selecting between piston and diaphragm devices depends on several criteria: 1 ) maximum allowable pressure, 2) range and differential, 3) surges and 4) media, whether hydraulic or pneumatic. Maximum allowable pressures for piston devices are much higher than for diaphragm devices. Most diaphragm devices have a maximum allowable pressure of 850 psi or less. where all piston devices have a maximum allowable pressure of 10,000 psi or more. Range and differential for diaphragm devices are lower than for piston devices. Many applications call for a low differential, ie: 20 psi, which may exclude piston devices which have a minimum differential of 60 psi or more. Surges are a part of every hydraulic system, and while many are small and have only a small effect on the switch. some are significant and can potentially destroy a pressure switch. Diapl ~ragm devices are the most sensitive to surges and will be damaged most easily. Piston devices are more tolerant of surges and will last longer in the same application. Hydraulic systems, which typically use oil ba';ed media. are more demanding on a system because they are usually at higher pressures, have wider pressure variations and produce more surges since the media does not compress. Pneumatic systems, which are typically air, are less demanding on a system since they are usually at lower pressures and the medium can compress itself to cushion the effects of surges. , As a guide, follow these basic steps: High maximum allowable pressures: ........................................piston Lower maximum allowable pressures: ..............................diaphragm Low differentials or pressureS: .........................................diaphragm High pressures: ......................................................................piston Minimal surges: .........: ......................................diaphragm or piston Constant surges: .......................................................................piston Hydraulic systems: ....................................................................piston Pneumatic systems: ........................................................diaphragm Piston Life For long piston life, the pressure medium should be filtered to keep foreign matter such as dirt and chips out of the piston assembly. Type G sealed piston devices are not recommended for use on dry gas media since there could be some leakage past the seal. The amount ol leakage will depend on the gas, media pressure and rate ol operation. I! is possible the switch would be inoperative. Dual Stage Pressure Switches The Type G is available with dual sta~e switches and provide two distinct levels of control from one device. These switches are most commonly used where dual functions are required or in sequencing applications such as alarm-shutdowns. Differential Pressure Switches ' The Type G is also avai labia as a differe, ntial switch. These devices are used to monitor the change in the difference between two pressures- They are unidirectional devices and used in applications to signal that a predetermined pressure difference has been reached as a result of a widening or increasing difference between the pressures. They can also be used in applications to signal that a predetermined difference has been reached as a result of a narrowing or decreasing pressure difference between the two pressures. Summary While a pressure switch may perform satisfactoril! it may prove to be unsatisfactory in a different apl: the deciding factor in the selection of a pressure switch should i based on the requirements of the application being considered.
