WA TE R ,E) U S a hydrant for all reasons Waterous... the hallmark of dependability Waterous has been making a mark in the fire fighting business for about a hundred years. In the 1880's and 90's we became well known for our excellent horse- drawn steam fire engines. In 1898 Waterous revolu- tionized fire fighting by introducing the first gasoline powered pumper.., still horse-drawn, however. In 1 906 we introduced the first gasoline powered, self- propelled pumper. It had two engines -- one to propel the truck and one to drive the pump. The first single gasoline engine, self-propelled fire truck, introduced in 1907, was another Waterous first. Four years later, in 1911, the New York City Fire Department bought their first gasoline powered pumper. It was a Waterous model which they called "The Giant" because of its imposing size. In those early years Waterous manufactured the com- plete vehicle including the engine, transmission, axles, body, etc. After World War I, Waterous continued to produce pumpers on commercial chassis such as Reo, Studebaker, Ford Model "T", etc. Then came the era of greater emphasis on manufacturing effectiveness through specialization. So in 1929 we built our last complete piece of fire apparatus and have since con- centrated on fire pumps, hydrants, and accessories. During the years of our growth in the pump business, Waterous was also a leader in the design, construction, and marketing of fire hydrants. In 1886 the first Waterous frost shield hydrant was introduced. In 1922 we developed a non-shield hydrant. Our markets con- tinued to grow with the modernization and expansion of cities across the country. It is our background of success in the hydrant business -- established over many years of providing dependable products -- which has resulted in the most advanced hydrant available · . . the Waterous Pacer. It is the result of many factors. An established record of total performance is critical. This includes such things as meeting delivery schedules, a long-life product, reliable product performance, and the company's reputation for service. Appearance is also important and Pacer hydrants have clean, modern lines · . . an aesthetic plus in any city. But, in the final analysis, dependability, installation cost, and ease of maintenance are why you buy one hydrant over another. That is why Pacer has been so widely accepted. And cities across the country keep coming back to Waterous. We believe satisfied cus- tomers -- the kind that come back -- are the true measure of a company's success. Pacer is from Waterous, a company on which you know you can rely. When you call on Pacer for emergency action, you'll get what you need, when you need it. So Pacer does more than just look pretty. It is the mark of dependabil- ity, and that's what fire hydrants are all about. Pacer. · · designed on a tradition of quality, built with today's technology Quality products are a rich tradition at Waterous -- a tradition we intend to keep building. It is a source of employee pride. More important, it is your assurance of reliable equipment. Quality cannot be based on crash programs; it must be based on everyday practice by all company employees. That is how the Waterous tradi- tion was established. Although past records are important, we continually strive to set the pace in the markets served. We realize that today's demands are more precise than past requirements. What was acceptable in the past is not good enough today; and what is adequate today, will not meet tomorrow's standards. So, we design today with tomorrow in mind. This has been and will continue to be our philosophy. Pacer is a good example. It is ahead of its time, but this is your assurance that it will meet the standards of tomorrow. Quality is the guideline on which all Waterous products are designed and manufactured. There are no tempo- rary expediencies which would interfere with our long- term tradition of quality. The Pacer is one more example of a superior product.., a product of Waterous. Pacer has features which simplify every aspect of installation, operation, and maintenance Many years of experience have taught us what you want in a hydrant. We have applied this knowledge in the design of Pacer. As a result it incorporates the best features of all hydrants with some features not avail- able elsewhere. What Pacer adds up to is a functionally designed hydrant unmatched in overall convenience. Pacer meets or exceeds all applicable industry stan- dards. Today's reality of increasing costs coupled with a need for greater dependability makes Pacer your best choice. You'll find that the initial price of Pacer is com- petitive. (It's not cheap; good quality products are never cheap.) Going beyond the purchase of Pacer, you'll soon find out what a really good choice you've made. installation is fast and easy resulting in con- siderable savings. And over the years you'll learn that Pacer maintenance will be kept to a minimum. When repair does become necessary, parts are always avail- able. Compare Pacer with other hydrants. You'll see why it is your best overall investment.., not just for today, but for the total operating life of the hydrant. FUNCTIONAL DESIGN OPERATING NUT Two-piece nut has cast iron upper sec- tion to provide the strength you need for wrenching. Lower portion -- the "working half" -- is made of brass for smooth operation and corrosion re- sistance. This is the kind of attention to detail that makes the Pacer a truly outstanding hydrant. OPERATING THREADS PROTECTED FROM RAIN, ICE, DIRT Operating threads on Waterous hy- drants are oil lubricated, and are pro- tected by O-ring seals above and below. Protected from water -- they don't corrode. RUST-FREE BRASS ROD BUSHING Provides a permanently smooth, strong surface for O-ring seals. Prevents damage to critical O-rings. QUICK. EASY LUBRICATION Just remove screw, and oil operating threads. Takes only a moment. EASY-OPEN FEATURE Slippery Teflon ring insert in operating nut, pioneered by Waterous, makes hydrants "twice as easy" to open. CHOICE OF CAP STYLES You can order your Pacer with either a standard nozzle cap, or you can choose the new, streamline rocker-lug type. The rocker-lug cap is opened with the same spanner wrench used for hose couplings. (Either style avail- able with or without chains.) TOP STOP Provides a positive limit to travel of main rod. CLAMPS SIMPLIFY SERVICE You remove only four bolts to loosen the upper housing -- makes access to working parts twice as easy. This simple design is made possible by a ring-and-clamp arrangement that dis- tributes clamping force, reduces num- ber of bolts required. THE ORIGINAL ALL-BRONZE DRAIN No composition, rubber, or leather face to peel, chip, or crack. No leaks, no adjustment, ever. Sliding valve is always free to center itself so it will al- ways close tightly. CLOSES WITH WATER PRESSURE Waterous is a true compression hy- drant. The main valve closes with, and is held shut by the water pressure. Valve is made of highest quality syn- thetic rubber that resists oils, salt, and temperature extremes. COMBINATION CAP NUT, and lower washer, protects rod threads from cor- rosion -- aids easy servicing. IL_ 360 N©ZZL~ ROTATION Waterous' exclusive stainless steel re- taining ring allows 360° rotation by merely loosening flange bolts, and turning nozzle section to exact posi- tion desired. Permits easy installa- tion, and improves appearance. TRAFFIC FLANGE Simplifies accident repairs. No need to dig when broken by impact of car or truck. Special flange and operating rod parts are designed to break at ground line. Replace with new parts supplied in repair kit. STRONGER CENTRIFUGALLY CAST BARREL Waterous uses a centrifugally cast barrel, just like water main. It is stronger, smoother, and more uniform than pit or static-casting. VALVE, Sf:'A i as well as all other in- ternal parts -- removes without dig- ging. Pacer's O-ring protected valve seat screws directly into the hydrant bottom. A big money-saver if trouble should arise in years to come! PROTECTEPOUTLEf PREYENTS CLOGGING Waterous drain outlets are bronze bushed to prevent corrosion, and are located under a flange to help prevent clogging. FLAT B~T'rOM. It is a reality that can't be overlooked and it can't be hidden. It is a taxpayer burden and city officials must consider it an integral part of the overall cost of the water distribution system. When we began designing the Pacer hydrant we con- sidered all the possibilities which would make installa- tion easy and would save you time and money. Features such as the flat bottom, the integral cross for bracing, and the strapping lugs for tying the hydrant to the main are time saving features which are standard with Pacer. Some of these features are available from some other hydrant manufacturers, but at extra cost. In addition Pacer offers such quality convenience fea- tures as: Infinite Adjustment of Nozzle Direction. This feature permits the nozzle section to be rotated 360° to the exact position desired. Simply loosen four flange bolts, rotate the nozzle section to position desired, and re- tighten the bolts. This allows faster installation; puts nozzles in convenient position for hose hook-up; and gives a pleasing, uniform appearance. Top Extension Kit. This allows the standpipe to be ex- tended to any height should the grade change imme- diately after hydrant installation or any time in the future. These features make Pacer the choice of installation crews around the country. Ask officials where Pacers are installed. They'll confirm that it is the fastest, easiest and least expensive hydrant to install. Options... whatever your requirements, Pacer fills the need Pacer has many features which are cost add-ons with other hydrants. Despite the fact that our standard Pacer is the most modern and complete hydrant avail- able, we also offer several options. With these options we are sure that your hydrant requirements can be met · . . whatever they may be. Optional valve seat, bronze-to-bronze. Safety sleeve coupling. Optional nozzle elevation and choice of caps. Easy maintenance, total service. It's part of the Pacer/INaterous package. Maintenance is a big part of a waterworks department budget. Routine upkeep such as periodic flushing, cleaning and painting, clearing of snow and ice can be easily planned and is good practice. However, major hydrant repairs, replacement, and modernization are some of the reasons why maintenance is so important and why it can be so expensive. This is also why Pacer was designed to allow fast and easy maintenance. As part of our total service program -- the tangible evidence of our continued interest in our customers -- we make available several kits for your convenience. Top Extension Kit. A hydrant that is so Iow that con- nection of a hose is impossible or difficult is a com- munity hazard. The Waterous top extension kit allows fast and inexpensive extension of the standpipe, to any desired height (in 6" increments) in case of grade change. Maintenance Kit. This kit is made available to you to assist in the "normal" maintenance of hydrants. It in- cludes such items as valve rubbers, gaskets, O-rings, 10 nuts, bolts, lubricants, etc. Traffic Repair Kit. Requirements for hydrant repairs are frequently the result of traffic accidents. And since they cannot be eliminated, minimizing the cost of repair is the next best thing. This is being done in many cities by using the Pacer Traffic Model. This Pacer is designed to break away without water loss and without damaging the lower barrel or other vital parts of the hydrant. Repairs can be made without digging or shutting off the water.., remember, Pacer is a true compression hydrant in which the main valve closes with and is held shut by water pressure. The traffic repair kit makes simple and fast repairs possible. Only the parts which were designed to and intended to break away will do so on impact. Repair is a matter of removing the broken parts and installing new parts which are all included in the repair kit, The job can be done by one man in about half an hour. Your crews are not tied up with repairs that could take con- siderably longer with other hydrants. And the area is no longer a potential hazard. L MODERNIZATION If you currently have old model'Waterous hydrants in your water distribution system, you are familiar with a truly exceptional product. However, even Waterous hydrants become outdated. For one reason or another, it may be necessary to modernize your system. Our Pacer modernization kit is the perfect choice. It not only offers all the benefits previously mentioned, but it can save considerable time and money. With the modernization kit, the initial cost is considerably less than purchasing a new hydrant. Another plus is that there is no need to dig out the old hydrant or to disturb the existing water main. This feature can save your community about two-thirds the cost of replacing old hydrants. REPLACEMENT Good quality hydrants last a long time, but they don't last forever. Sooner or later they must be replaced. Often it is too expensive to continue to repair old hydrants; parts are no longer available; or, the com- munity requires the security of a modern, up-to-date hyd rant. If you're in a position of having to decide on repair or replacement of old hydrants, look at Pacer. You may find that factors such as initial cost, iow installation cost, and minimum maintenance offer economic ad- vantages over repair of old hydrants. You'll learn also that Pacer has advantages not found in any other hy- drant. 11 For unsurpassed performance Waterous Pacer; a hydrant for all reasons Waterous continues to be a leader in new hydrant designs which insure dependability and simplify instal- lation and maintenance. Pacer continues to prove this leadership. Success in this business doesn't happen by accident. It is the result of putting together the right features and benefits in the right way. This is what we've done with Pacer... a hydrant for all reasons. 12 Specify a Pacer SPECIFY A PACER The following items should be considered for in- clusion in any specification written for fire hy- drants.
