Not since the butterfly valve was introduced in the 1950's has a product development had so much
potential impact on the waterworks industry. The resilient seated gate valve is far superior to the tradi-
tional double disc gate valve in sealing characteristics, durability and ease of maintenance. The
Waterous Series 500 is a sophisticated design developed through years of exhaustive research and
testing by the major European manufacturer of resilient wedge valves. The ingenious geometry of the
wedge and valve body sealing surfaces results in a seal that ensures absolute shut-off, low-torque
operation and minimal maintenance.
Waterous has adapted this exclusive design to a rugged American valve that meets all applicable
AWWA and fire protection standards, and is ideal for use in potable water distribution, fire protection
and waste water applications.
SI'EM SEALING, LOW TORQUE
The series 500 stem is manganese bronze or low zinc,
high strength bronze (optional), and meets all ap-
plicable AWWA C509 standards. The stem has a
finish which provides an ideal sealing surface for the
O-ring seals. A bronze wedge nut is used with the
bronze stem, providing Iow operating torque and no
binding.
Thrust washers are used above and below the
stem thrust collar to minimize operating torque.
Series 500 stem sealing is by double O-rings, and the
seal between the stuffing box and the bonnet is ac-
complished with an O-ring for no-leak
performance. Should maintenance ever
be required, all O-ring seals can be
replaced while the valve is fully open
and the line is pressurized.

SMOOTH, FULL
DIAMETER WATERWAY
Jamming, leaking and associated damage to the operating
mechanism do not occur with the Series 500 smooth
waterway design. Also eliminated are the disadvantages
of using double-disc valves and other resilient seated valves
which have recesses at the bottom of the bore where
stones or other debris can collect and prevent closure. Flow
losses are also minimized. The full diameter waterway and
absolute shutoff make the Series 500 tapping valve ideal.

WEDGE AND BODY
SEALING CHARACTERISTICS
The Series 500 Wedge is a ductile iron casting encased in a
bonded-in-place Nitrile elastomer covering which forms the
sealing surfaces. The special geometric design ensures a
drop-tight seal without subjecting the elastomer to damag-
ing sliding abrasion during shutoff. It also allows the Series
500 to seal equally well with the flow in either direction, in
any installation position and with
minimal stem thrust. The Series 500
body is coated both inside and out with
tough, durable epoxy to prevent corro-
sion. The epoxy coating meets or ex-
ceeds all requirements of AWWA C550
Standard for Protective Interior Coatings
for Valve and Hydrants. The life expec-
tancy of the Series 500 wedge is far
longer than that of conventional metal
