REF: Median paving, Fre~ort Parlovay
Bid Item I-2 ofour Freeport Parkway Reconstruct Project sets up 250 SY of median
paving ~$42.00/SY for a total of $10,500.00. The scheduled repairs arc shown at four
locations 0vI-.l through M-4) and indicate replacement of 4" thick concrete that is
severely damaged at those four locations. The actual field measurement ofthe damaged
mcdian totals 157 $Y for a cost of $6,594.00. Please note that the repair M-4 has been
eliminated since a leit turn lane is being built at this location at the expense ofthe Koll
Ceuter Project now under construction. However, I have added a localion at the Gateway
crossover that is also in serious ne~! of replacement.
Median Pavin~ damaged areas:
M-1 59 SY
M-2 53 SY
M-3 15 SY
C.~ateway 30 SY
157 SY
Because of the inevitabili~ of future damage due to th~ heavy track traffic at the
intersections and crossovers, I recomm~'~d the installation of a monolithic median nose at
the M-3 instead of the median pavement as scheduled. This will be easier on the traffic
and structurally more maintainable ~uce the median area would bo poured monolithic

with the curb and the concrc~ thickness would graduate from 11" to 14" thick instead 05'
the 4" c~. The recommendod procodur~ to install tl~ mono median nos~ is as follows:
1. S~wcut and remove existin~ curb and ~utter and median paving.
2. Excavate 6" below subgrade and install 6" of C.T.B. or lime stabilization.
3. Pour reinforced concrete medinn nose to replace 8" pavement and 6" curb.
The ~bllowing prices are submitted tbr your consideration as a unit price to repair and
remove each median nose:
A. Full-width median nose (+/-14') :/;2,200.00
B. Tttrn lane median nose (+/-4') 900.00
A detail o£the turn lane median nose as approved for thc Koll Center Project is attached.
The full-width nose would be alon~ the same design only wider. Median nose work
would have to be done after ail north and southbound lane repairs have been completed
and open to traff~. Local bardcadin~ would be required to move tra~c toward the
outside lanes since portions of both inside lanes would be removed.
In addition to the replacement at the M-3 location, I recommend that the crossovers at
Gateway and Fritz as well as the mm lane at Airline be considered for replacement at this
time.
