Dear Mr. Griffin: /
1
On behalf of Haverty Furniture CompanieS, Inc., we are requesting a variance to
delete lime stabilization from the pavement sul~grade. We request approval for the
subgrade in the drive and parking areas to be ~carified to a depth of 6 inches and
recompacted in lieu of the city standard 6-inch lime~tabilized subgrade as follows:
· For the parking areas we propose ~,_~-inch~ 3,000 ps~einforced concrete
~ pavement section on compacted subgrade to i'epla~e the city standard 5-inch
3,000 psi reinforced concrete pavement section on a 6-inch lime stabilized
subgrade.
For the loading dock areas and west side fire lane we propose a 7-inch 3,000 psi
reinforced concrete paving section to replace the city standard 6-inch 3,000 psi
reinforced concrete pavement section on a 6-inch lime stabilized subgrade.
We have attached a signed and sealed letter of recommendation from the
geotechnical engineer, Henley Johnston & Associates, Inc. If you have any questions or
require any additional information, please do not hesitate to call either Pat Acker or
myself.
Sincerely,
HALFF AS~ATES, INC.

· Pavement Design
Regional Distribution Center
Dallas, Texas
Dear Mr. Schmidt:
As discussed last week, we have reviewed the pavement recommendations for the
subject project. We recommend that the design of the pavement for the subject project
be modified to include special treatment of the soil surface to allow for elimination of the
6-in. lime treated subgrade. We recommend that the subgrade in parking and drive
areas be scarified to a depth of at least 6 inches, water added as needed, and this layer
compacted to a dry density of 95 to 98 percent of the maximum dry density determined
by ASTM D 698 at a moisture content between Optimum Moisture Content and four
percentage points above Optimum Moisture Content determined by the same test. No
leveling sand should be used under the pavement, and the soil sudace should be moist
when concrete is placed. All joints must be sealed and the sealant maintained.
We trust this provides the information you need at this time. Please call us if you have
any questions or require additional information.
