Re: Pier Inspection Report No. 1
August 28, 1995
Larry,
We have reviewed the results of Pier Inspection Report No. 1, dated August 28, 1995, prepared by Gee
Consultants, Inc. Of particular concern was Pier b-13. This pier was reported to be out of plumb by 4-inches.
The total depth of the pier is 40'-2".
The contractor submitted shop drawings for these piers stating the drilled pier construction would conform to
the contract specifications and the American Concrete Institute (ACI) specification 336.3R. The contract
specification for this project and the drilled piers is based on the North Central Texas Council of Governments
(NCTCOG) construction and material specifications. The NCTCOG specifications state that the drilled piers
shall not be out of plumb by more than 1-1/2" in 10 feet. Extrapolating this requirement to a 40-foot deep
pier, sets the plumbness requirement to no more than 6-inches.
The ACI specification for plumbness is slightly more strict, allowing for out of plumbness in the amount of
1% of the total pier length. For a 40-foot deep pier, this would equal 0.4-feet, or 4.8-inches.
We have discussed these standards with both Gee Consultants and Natgun Corporation. Both Agree that the
ACI requirement of 1% of the total pier length shall be the criteria for acceptance for pier plumb tolerance on
this project.
