Re:
Visual Evaluation of
Crack in Whispering Hills
Coppell, Texas
Haynes, Hcllon Job No. 15103
Dear Mr. Daniels:
in response to your request, I met you and Mr. Randy Fleming of Ginn &
Associates at the jobsite on October 21, 1985. The crack in question
was roughly parallel and two to six feet southeast of centerline. I
pointed out that it may have been formed initially by a delay of the
sawing of centerline joint in this part of the slab. When we checked
the next section to the northeast, a similar crack was not present.
We have subsequently learned that the concrete in each section that
we compared was placed on two different days, namely 9/27/84 and
9/25/84. There is evidence from field sheets that it rained on 9/26/84.
If the crack was caused by the sanitary sewer, it should have occurred
on both sides of the centerline. The plans show that the storm sewer
is on the northwest side of the street and the crack in question is on
the southeast side of the street.
You had previously had the area in question cored and the cores do not
show any voids beneath them, thus indicating little, if any, localized
settling of the subgrade.
There is evidence of settlement along the southeast curb line and it is
my understanding that this is caused by a utility box in this area which
you have already agreed to correct.
If you want us to meet with you and other interested parties, we will
be glad to do so. It appears that there are many other more probable
causes of the longitudinal crack two to six feet southeast of the
centerline than any settlement over the 8 inch sanitary sewer located
beneath the centeriine.
We will be awaiting further directions from you.
Respectfully submitted,
