Stone, PE Dear Mr. Doyle It was brought to my attention that a portion of the 30-inch RCP culvert under the aney at Bethel School Road has experienced some settlement. The developer has requested that we evaluate the situation and reccomend a solution other than reconstuction. The two interior joints have settled approximately 6 inches. The invert of the pipe can be grouted to re-establish a positive 0.5 % grade across the culvert. The addition of this grout will reduce the effective area of the pipe by only 15%. Since the culvert is functioning under inlet control conditions an additional 6 inches in headwater (which is available) will convey the same amount of flow as originally intended. This addition of grout will also seal the partially open joint stopping any seepage of water into the embedment material. I feel that this corrective measure will result in a culvert that will function properly under present conditions. It should be noted that this is a somewhat temporary stucture and when Bethel School Road is improved this culvert will be removed. I have attached a sketch showing the profile of the culvert and a section of the pipe. I am confident that this solution will meet with your satisfaction. Thank you for your attention in this matter.
