RE: Starbucks Coffee / Deck Construction
coppell, TX
Dear Mr. Quigg:
! have reviewed the drawings for the t:rolx~sed deck and have inspected the Post
Oak (Quercus Phellos) in question at the property referenced above. It is my opinion that
the construction of the deck will not negatively impact the health of the t;'ee. The
construction techniques that are raost injurious to existing trees ,are grading (cutting and
filling), water table fluctuations and removal of the critical root zone mass (CRZ). The
deck drawings indicated the structural members are to be attached to the existing concrete
foundation via a ledger and then attached to five foo6ng posts in the CRZ. Each footing
will displace one (1) square foot of CRZ for a total of five (5) square feet. There is
approximately 1,720 square feet'of CRZ and the displacement represents less than .3% of
the CR~ The tom! deck coverage is approximately 464 square fe~t or approximately
26.9% of the CRZ. The deck coverage will not impact the CRZ, ,as it will allow for an
adequate exchange of water, nulrients and oxygen with the feeder roots.
There has been extensive arbodcultural work on the tree and the irrigation system
has been hand trenched around the pe~neter of the CRZ where disruption of the root
zone occurred during the installation of the road and building pad. Sprinkler heads
within the CRZ also appear to have been placed by the accepted radial raethod of hand
trenching wherein a minimum number of roots are severed. The CRZ will be covered
with a 2"-Y' layer of shredded hardwood mulch to minimize soil deposition and erosion
and mitigate swings in soil temperature regimes. It is also my understanding that the
propeety owner will employ d~e services of arc. putable arboricultura] firm to mnnitor and
maintain this tree as well as the other un site trees upon completion of the project ~d for
a period of two years after final acceptance.
