FIRE LINE SERVICES, INC. 6032 N. O'CONNOR ROAD IRVING, TEXAS 75039 972-444-0949 1 FAX 972-444-8356 TRENCH SAFETY DATA TOWNE CENTER 230 N. DENTON TAP ROAD COPPELL, TEXAS ----"-';~',' ~'~.: ~ '..~ ,~, TRENCH SAFETY SPECIFICATIONS These specifications cover the basic requirements for shoring and/or sloping of excavations for the installation of sanitary sewer lines, water lines, and storm sewer lines for the Towne Center project, 230 N. Denton Tap Road. This data addresses the safety of workers in a trench excavation and does not, in any way relieve the contractor of his responsibility and liability to ensure the safety of the project and workers. It is not the intent of these specifications to specify every detail and procedure of the trenching/sloping operations; nevertheless, they shall conform to the high standards of engineering and of trench safety excavation. The personnel protection systems shown in-these specifications have been designed to accommodate all commonly found soil conditions and meet the safety standards of the industry. In accordance with Revised OSHA (Appendix A to Subpart B effective March 2, 1990), the contractor's "Competent Person" shall conduct the required Soil Classification Tests. Dudng construction, the contractor's "Competent Person" will monitor the soil classification as required by OSHA 1926. Contractor shall be responsible for selecting the appropriate safety system option shown in these specifications, depending on trench depth and soil conditions. The contractor shall perform all shoring/sloping work under this contract in accordance with all applicable codes and standard safety requirements and regulations. PRIOR TO EXCAVATION: Before any individual enters an excavation, the excavation will be inspected by a "Competent Person" to ensure that trench excavation has been performed according to OSHA requirements and to ensure that no anomalies are observed which may effect the safety of the trench project. This person will be "Competent" as described in OSHA 1926.650(b). DURING EXCAVATION: Daily inspections of the excavation shall be made by the "Competent Person". If there is evidence of possible cave-in or slides, all work in the excavation shall cease until the necessary precautions have been taken to ensure safety of the workmen and the trench. Excavated materials shall be stockpiled away from the trench, so as not to affect the trench stability. As a minimum to protect the workmen from falling debris, the stockpile of soil shall not be closer than two (2) feet from the edge of the excavation. The design of the trench safety system shall take into account the operation of heavy equipment adjacent to the trench. The trench safety system that is utilized will be modified as conditions warrant. When trench depth, and/or backfilling, is within five (5) feet, all shoring may be removed unless the trench conditions indicate a hazard. No person shall be exposed to the lower portion of the trench after shoring has been removed. Ladders or other adequate means of exit shall be provided and located as per OSHA requirements. SPECIFIC EXCAVTIONS FOR THIS PROJECT: WATER LINES AND APPURTENCES will generally be no more than five (5) feet in depth and will not require shoring or sloping of the trenches. In specific areas where the soil conditions warrant, or the depth is greater than five (5) feet, the appropriate trench safety system utilized will be determined by the conditions encountered. STORM DRAIN LINE profiles indicate that the trenching shall not exceed five (5) feet in depth and will not require shoring or sloping. Where soil conditions warrant, the appropriate trench safety system will be utilized based upon the conditions encountered. SANITARY SEWER profiles indicate trenching of five (5) feet to seven (7) feet in depth. Trench safety shall be achieved by means of sloping of trench walls and/or a combination of sloping and shoring as depth and conditions indicate. No workmen shall enter the trench until such time that the safety precautions are in effect and the "Competent Person" has inspected the trench. TRENCH SAFETY EQUIPMENT DESIGN AND SPECIFICATIONS: Shoring, trench boxes, manhole guards, and related safety equipment tabulated data are provided by Speed Shore Corporation in the following pages. The specific type of trench safety equipment utilized will be determined by the nature of the excavation and conditions encountered. FIRE LINE SERVICES, INC. 6032 N.
