Introduction The purpose of this stud3, is to delineate the wetland and waters of the United States and to coordinate the results with the Fort Worth District Corps of Engineers. Wetlands are defined by three elements: 1) Wetland hydrology 2) Hydric or waterlogged soils and 3) Aquatic vegetation. Although ponds, swamps and marshes are obvious wetlands, other wetland areas are not so obvious, some are dry most of the year and many are dynamic and move over time. Section 404 of the Clean Water Act authorizes the Corps of Engineers to issue permits to modify waters of the U.S. including wetlands. It is important to note that only the Corps of Engineers has the authorization to recognize wetlands and other jurisdictional areas. Because of this, the Corps may or may not accept the delineation provided as a result of this stud)'. They may want to veri~' the information provided by conducting a site visit. Past experience has shown that the Corps generally accepts the delineation without verification when it is fully documented and completed by those experienced and trained in this area. This report contains information in support of the wetland and waters of the U.S. delineation shown in appendix 2. 11. Properly Description and Location ,4. General The general area is located in the City of Coppell in Dallas County, Texas (see figure 1 Location Map). The general site area is located South of Sand3' Lake Road and east of MacArthur Blvd. (see figure 2 Neighborhood Map). The site is approximately 10 acres. (see figure 3 Site Map). The metes and bounds description of the site is included in figure 4. B. Streatns and ponds The tract contains some floodplain from the Elm Fork of the Triinity River, and is part of the Elm Fork of the Trinl~- watershed. The site is shown on a U.S.G.S. Quad Map, Carrollton, Texas. (see figure 5). C. Development ,4ctivities There is no urban development of the site at present. Future development will be as a residential or multifamily development. D. Wetlands Inventory map A copy. of the National Wetland Inventoo' Map is included in figure 7. This map shows no wetland areas on the subject site. E. Photographs Photographs were taken of the site. These photographs are shown in appendix 3 along with a map showing the location of the photographs. Morrison Hydrology Engineering, In~ Pege 3 III. Hydrology Description The site was visited and there is evidence of hydrology fxom a recent rain at the site. The ground was wet and there was standing water as shown on photograph 8. IV. Soils Descriptions Information for tins is based on the Soil Survey of Dallas Count),, (United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resource Consew-ation Commission formerly Soil Coaservation Service In Cooperation with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station). This document describes the soil as shown below: Trinity clay, occasionallyfloodea~ This is a deep, somewhat poorly drained, nearly level soil on flood plains. The areas are long and range from 25 to as much as several thousand acres in size. This soil is subject to flooding during major storms unless levees are constructed to protect the areas. Typically, the surface layer is moderately alkaline, very dark grayish brown clay 5 inches thick. To a depth of 31 inches, the soil is moderately alkaline, very dark gray clay. To a depth of 48 inches, it is moderately alkaline, back clay'. Below that, to a depth of 68 inches, the soil is moderately' alkline, black clay that has brov~tish mottles. Permeability is very. slow, and the available water capacity is high. Runoff is very slow, and the hazard of erosion is slight. Included in mapping are small areas of Ovan and Seagoville soils and small sloughlike areas of Trimty soils that are frequently flooded. The included soils make up less than 20 percent of any' one mapped area. The Trinity soil is used mainly as cropland, for which it has high potential. If the soil is properly managed, the yield of the crops commonly grown in the county is good_ Leaving crop residue on or near the surface helps to maintain the tilth and productivity of the soil. In places, drainage outlets are needed. This soil has high potential for use as pasture. It is well suited to improved bermuda grass. This soil has very low potential for urban uses. The hazard of flooding and the wetness, corrosivity, and very, high shrink-swell potential of the soil are limitations. In addition, the walls of cuts and excavations tend to cave in or slough. The hazard of flooding and clayey texture and wetness of the soil are the main limitations to recreation uses. This soil is in capability subclass llw and in Clayey Bottomland range site. We dug several test holes and found evidence of saturated soils, low-chroma colors, and models of rust coloring indicating that the soil was hydric. V. Vegetation Description The 10 acre site was mowed and contained Bermuda grass. The jurisdictional area was covered with native trees, brush and grasses. There was a portion of the site covered with Mesquite (l~rosopis juriflora) Bur Oak (Quecus Macrocarpa) and Osage-orange (Maclna pomifem Sclmeid). This portion was well drained and rather steep, and was definitely not jurisdictional. The jurisdictional area indicated on the delineation in appendix 2 was covered with Black Willow (Salix nigra) and Bulrush (marsh grass). Morrison Hydrology Engineering, Inc. Page4 VI. Summary and Recommendations The 10-acre site contains 0.15 acres ofjurisdictional area at a total length of 390 feet. None of this area is environmentally si~ynificant. .,. . ....... :,.¥ :-"'.'
