I was out there yesterday and saw the 5 & 6 rows deeply embedded into the bank so “yes”
go ahead and stop all west end upper basket rows 7 through 10 at Sta 110+00. Let me know if
you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,
Keith Burkholder

Niraj, gabion basket row 5 ended at sta 110+00. Row 6 has been installed to Sta 110+00 also. The baskets of row 5 and 6
are at least 12 feet into the bank on the inside of the baskets and quite a bit more on the outside of the baskets. Please
see the attached picture. Again, would it be possible to end the upper rows of baskets at Sta. 110+00. Please advise.
Thank you,
Darryl

Darryl,
Great talking to you on Friday. Please see below:

Thank you Niraj, I was going from sta. to sta. this helps. There are a couple of issues, gabion basket row 1 is a double
basket, so row 1 quantity is doubled which would increase the quantity 49.93 CY bringing the total to 495.11 total CY.
Gabion basket row 10 is 3’ wide by 1.5’ tall which would drop the total to 486.1.
TNP: We agree.
The contractor has row 5 installed close to the stationing on the revised plan, would it be possible to end the East end of
the gabions at sta 110+00. This would help the quantities a little. TNP: There may be an opportunity to revise the end
points. In general, the gabions need to be embedded a minimum of three feet into the bank. We don’t believe this
will change the end points very much from what is shown.
th
With the 10 row of gabion basket being 1.5’ tall and the concrete beam for the anchors being 20” tall, the anchors and
anchor beam would not be encased by the basket. Is this row of anchors necessary? TNP: The tie-back anchors in the
tenth row of 18” baskets needs to be installed even though the grade beam will not be fully encased by the gabion
basket. The grade beam and anchors will provide top of wall stability and assist in preventing surface erosion.
Thanks!
niraj

Another question for you, see below. Pay item description states – Tie back anchors shall be measured by linear foot of
acceptable anchor in place. The anchor length measured shall be the length of the drilled and grouted hole as specified
on the plans. The anchors in TB Row 5 and 4 are 25’ into the ground with 7 feet sticking out to go through the gabions
2
which makes the total anchor length 32’ and they are wanting to bill for the 32’ is that correct? If it is then we will be
close to the contract quantity with TB anchor rows 5, 4 and 3
Thanks again,
DZ

Darryl,
The anchor length is the length of the drilled and grouted hole, but you’re not including the tie back system –
nuts/bolts/plates, etc. The bid item says acceptable anchor in place; which includes everything and the bid item is for
Tie-back Anchors. You cannot just measure the part that is in the bank and say that is the tie-back. I get how you would
read it as that is how you are to pay for it, but that is not what it is saying. It is saying that is how you measure the
anchor length not the tieback anchor complete in place. I have done over 200 anchor projects and they have never
measured a tie-back that way. Otherwise we would lose a ton of money because we are eating a ton of footage of the
anchor. If we cannot agree on the tie-backs then we will have to have a meeting because my boss isn’t going to go for
this.
Backfill- Not sure how you calculated this but we go by haul tickets and the haul tickets totaled to 260 CY. You can have
all of them if you want them.
Everything else I am good with.
Thanks,

Tiffany, see below for the quantities for pay app 2.
Item 1 Mobilization - .25 this period for a total of .35 to date
Item 2 sign - 0
Item 3 site prep - 0 this period total paid for in pay app 1
Item 4 SW3P Should be the percentage of the pay item per project complete
3
Item 5 Barricades 0 this period total paid for in pay app 1
Item 6 Backfill 200.32
Item 7 Gabion Baskets 153.53 this period 193.53 to date. I understand this if for rows 1, 2, and 3. You had 200.32.
The first two rows were installed per the original plans Sta. starting at sta. 127.5 on the East end which is different from
the revised plan but was approved by the Engineer.
Item 8 Tie Back Anchors See the Pay Item description – Tie back anchors shall be measured by linear foot of
acceptable anchor in place. The anchor length measured shall be the length of the drilled and grouted hole as specified
on the plans. So going by that we have 4 25’ anchors performance tested and 6-25’anchors proof tested in TB row 5
which would be a total of 10 anchors at 25’ = 250 lf of acceptable anchors in place.
Item 9 18” grouted rip rap 0
Item 10 restoration 0
Please let me know if you have any questions.
