FYI, the bridge over Grapevine Creek did not respond well to Texas Sterling’s attempt to remove the sidewalk from the
west edge. Below is a string of emails with Volk regarding assessment by the structural engineer.
Thanks,
Kent

Jay, I think the contractor understands and appreciates that their method caused the damage and they seem prepared
to deal with it. They need direction from our designers and the City. My request for your team is to:
1. As quickly as possible, assess whether traffic has to stay off of the outside lane, or if there is an option to plate
over the damaged stretch (or some other short-term solution)
2. Within a week (as A&F suggests) provide an analysis of options for the detour of both north and southbound
traffic to the western lanes. Given the difficulty in removing the sidewalk, they have suggested leveling up to
curbline with asphalt, but there may be a better option
I have been on-site and the area of damage if limited, and appears to be isolated to underneath the sidewalk. Given the
limited scope of damage, it seems that some fairly quick-to-implement options may be available. If we need to meet on-
site, let me know.
Thanks,
Kent

Kent, with respect, the contractors actions in taking a jackhammer to the bridge superstructure were reckless at
best. We will do what we can to resolve the matter quickly, but a resolution tomorrow is not realistic.

Jay/Claudio, we need a recommendation regarding handling traffic tomorrow, not next week. The
detour option evaluation can wait, but do we really need the one lane taken down or can we do
something to remediate quickly?

Kent and Darryl,
We ran this by Aguirre & Fields, please see their response below:
Based on the photos attached, it’s clear that the bridge deck has been significantly damaged and the
flexural capacity significantly reduced. Our first recommendation is to barricade the lane nearest to the
damage immediately. To evaluate if their proposal for the HMAC level-up is feasible, we’ll need time to
perform an analysis of the existing bridge deck and girders. We’ll get back to you early next week with
our recommendations.
I’ve cc’d Geoff and Eugene in case there are any other questions/comments on this.
Thanks.
