Darryl,
Per the TXDOT Concrete Repair Manual, for a full-depth deck repair, the perimeter of the repair will need to be saw-cut
½” to ¾” deep without cutting the existing reinforcing steel. The intent is to keep the existing steel intact while removing
the concrete in the damaged area.
Please refer Texas Sterling to Chapter 3, Section 4 of the repair manual for further information.
Thanks,

Darryl,
The proposed full depth repair drawing shows sawcutting the full depth of deck down to the existing bridge beams. I
believe this is not a correct procedure for a full depth repair.
We want to keep all existing rebar intact for the repair. The existing steel has not been damaged and is embedded
across the full width of the deck. Keeping this will provide a better product than trying to drill into the deck on both
sides to epoxy bars into the existing deck.
Please let me know if we can proceed with this repair, keeping the existing rebar in place.
Thanks,

Please see attached for our deck repair details.
Due to the extent of the damage visible in the photos provided, we determined a full depth deck repair to be the most
appropriate method. Our details show the general repair configuration and refer to the TXDOT Concrete Repair Manual
for specific information on repair methods and products to be used.
We have allowed in the general notes for the contractor to provide alternative repair plans signed by an engineer at
their option.
Please don’t hesitate to give us a call with any questions or concerns.

Jay,
Traffic needs to remain closed for the exterior lane as the deck is not fully bearing on the girders. Since map pattern
cracking on the bottom of deck is visible, full deck repair for the damaged bays is necessary in lieu of partial-depth.
Referring to the TxDOT Concrete Repair Manual, (http://onlinemanuals.txdot.gov/txdotmanuals/crm/crm.pdf), the
damage from the photos is classified as a major spall. We recommend using a Class S mixture based similar properties to
the existing bridge deck, Class S mixture being readily available and performance since this portion of existing deck will
be utilized for the first phase of construction. This will require about 4 days until the concrete has sufficient strength to
return to service. If the city gives us approval by 4pm today, we can assemble a repair plan sheet and have that to you all
by COB tomorrow.
Once the deck repair is finalized, we will give further recommendations on how to proceed with the remainder of
sidewalk/median removal.
Thanks,
Eugene

Jay, I think the contractor understands and appreciates that their method caused the damage and they seem prepared
to deal with it. They need direction from our designers and the City. My request for your team is to:
1. As quickly as possible, assess whether traffic has to stay off of the outside lane, or if there is an option to plate
over the damaged stretch (or some other short-term solution)
2. Within a week (as A&F suggests) provide an analysis of options for the detour of both north and southbound
traffic to the western lanes. Given the difficulty in removing the sidewalk, they have suggested leveling up to
curbline with asphalt, but there may be a better option
I have been on-site and the area of damage if limited, and appears to be isolated to underneath the sidewalk. Given the
limited scope of damage, it seems that some fairly quick-to-implement options may be available. If we need to meet on-
site, let me know.
Thanks,
Kent

Jay/Claudio, we need a recommendation regarding handling traffic tomorrow, not next week. The

Kent and Darryl,
We ran this by Aguirre & Fields, please see their response below:
Based on the photos attached, it’s clear that the bridge deck has been significantly damaged and the
flexural capacity significantly reduced. Our first recommendation is to barricade the lane nearest to the
damage immediately. To evaluate if their proposal for the HMAC level-up is feasible, we’ll need time to
perform an analysis of the existing bridge deck and girders. We’ll get back to you early next week with
our recommendations.
I’ve cc’d Geoff and Eugene in case there are any other questions/comments on this.
Thanks.
