Subject: HMAC Overlay on Existing Bridge Deck
So far we have been unable to remove the sidewalk from the bridge deck in a way that leaves a smooth
surface. In the locations we have chipped the sidewalk all the way down to the level of the deck it has left
gouges in the deck.
To provide a smoother surface and reduce the risk of damaging the bridge deck we would like to propose
placing an asphalt overlay on the right southbound lane. This will allow us to level up the lane and fill any voids
where the sidewalk has not been fully removed down to the deck. The left southbound lane (Stage 2
temporary northbound lane) as bare concrete.
Currently there is two 11’ lanes plus the 6’ sidewalk. The traffic control plan calls for minimum 12’ lanes. These
lane widths widen at the north end of the bridge to allow more turning radius. With 2.5’ for the traffic barrier this
will leave 12.75’ for each lane. This will be a load of less than 50 tons of asphalt added to the bridge.
