In the PDF you sent, three proposed shafts are shown to be moved. The most challenging shaft would be that one located under the wingwall. To move that shaft away from the identified utility, we would need to extend the abutment and move the entire wingwall which would impact the pavement and rail above and the riprap below. The other two shafts identified may be moved along their respective caps, but we may need to provide additional reinforcing in the caps to accommodate changes in the stresses. Typically we would provide a minimum of 1-ft to 2-ft clearance between drilled shafts and utilities, and as close as 6-in in cases when we have high confidence in the utility locations. The Contractor is wanting to maintain a 3-ft clearance due to the fact that we cannot verify actual location of the lines due to the depth. Based on the PDF provided, it appears there’s already adequate clearance between the shafts on the abutment and bent and the identified utility, though perhaps not at the wingwall shaft. The identified utility is 4 - 2” conduits, 3 are being utilized and one is empty. The locate marks are based on the empty conduit and we are unsure of the arrangement of the 4 conduits, or how much separation there is between the conduits, The PDF does not identify a conflict at Abutment 4, but it’s quite clear that the utility runs directly through a proposed shaft at this end. The utility at Abutment 4 is only 4-ft deep. The utility company is proposing to expose the utility and move out of the way of the drill shaft. 2 To provide a good estimate of time and cost, we would need to clarify the required minimum clearance between shaft and utility as well as the diameter of the utility. We would also need a copy of the CADD file showing this utility to then determine exactly where we have a conflict and which shafts need to move. The drawing we sent shows what the contractor feels are the conflicts. If moving the drill shafts is a possibility, our next step is to meet with the utility to see what their response is to the having a 3’ clearance from the edge of the drill shaft to the locate marks. Can you clarify/confirm the items above? I’ve cc’d Geoff w/ A&F to keep him in the loop. Thanks! Claudio Segovia | Engineer J.
