The dedicated right turn lane was created last Thursday by the contractor for Dallas County. Dallas County is funding and supervising the construction of Beltline Road. I contacted the County last Thursday, after the change, because the approved plans did not show restricting the lane to right turn only. The restriction is temporary only and should be removed in 3-5 weeks. The restriction is necessary while the County's contractor constructs improvements on the south side of Beltline. My staff is meeting with the County tomorrow to discuss this further. We are providing a copy of your emaii to the County so they can better understand how the restriction impacts citizens. We will be exploring whether or not it is feasible and safe to stripe through the intersection to allow the lane to continue across Beltline. As stated, the contractor is working in the intersection and the lane, as it existed, could not continue straight through the intersect[on. But, there may be a way to modify its configuration to allow it to be reopened. I am out of the office until Monday but when I return I will let you know the outcome. Again, thank you for your concern. Ken Griffin, P.E. Director of Engineering/Public Works >> JWeisenbach <JWeisenbach@jonescarter.com> 01/09 1:42 PM >>> Dear Mr. Griffin, I am very upset with the lane changes made to MacArthur southbound at Beltline Rd. The right lane has been switched, as you probably know, just this week, to a "right turn only" lane. This creates even more problems than it did when the "right turn only" lane was created on MacArthur northbound at Beltline Rd. because there are less available lanes to begin with. Doesn't anyone in the Engineering Dept. actually drive on these roads? At any given time on MacArthur south to Beltline from as far back as Condor there is a line of traffic because there is only one lane available to go straight. The amount of cars using that right turn lane is insignificant and it seems to me that there wasn't a problem to begin with. Another concern is getting in and out of the retail centers located along MacArthur on the northwest and southeast corners. It's hazardous merging into the center lane if you aren't turning right on Beitline. I know this personally because my daughter is one of the unfortunate drivers that got hit by another car as she was coming out of the Mobil station into that center lane going north. I would appreciate it if these concerns were taken into consideration as they are shared by many other Coppell citizens that I have spoken with in the last couple of days.
