Centering rings are provided on valve flange lot mating with tapping sleeve flange and are industry standardized through 12". Tapping valve outlet ends for attaching tapping machine are available with either mechanical joint or asbestos cement ,~ "L.,~ joints. valves 4'-12" are rated for 200 psi working pressure and are tested hydrostatically to 400 psi. 14"-24" valves _-, have rated working pressure o1150 psi and are tested Io 300 psi. O-Ring stem seals are standard on NRS valves. Large size tapping valves can be equipped with bevel or spur , gearing, rollers, tracks & scrapers and by-pass valves. [] Water Service ANNISTON, ALABAMA GENERAL Tapping valves shall be ol the double disc parallel seat, iron body, bronze mounled bottom wedge type. They shall comply with the American Water Works Association Gate Valve Standard C-500 as latest revised. RATING Tapping Valves shall be rated at 200 psi water working pressure with 400 psi hydrostatic test lot slructural soundness for 4" Ihrough 12" and 150 psi water working pressure with 300 psi hydrostatic tesl for slruclural soundness in sizes 14" ihrough 24". Testing shall be conducted in accordance with AWWA C-500. END All valves through 12" shall mate all sleeves through 12" outlet regardless of manufacturer. CONFIGURATIONS Valves shall be lurnished with tapping sleeve side to ANSI B161 llanged end with centering ring. Outlet side of valve shall be mechanical joint with (without) accessories to AWWA C-1 f 1. Asbestos Cement (AC) for Class 150 or 200 machined end A/C pipe (gasket by others). MATERIALS All cast iron shall conform to ASTM-A-126 Class B. Castings shall be clean and sound without delects that will impair their service. No plugging or welding of such delects will be allowed. Stems shall be manganese bronze having a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi, a minimum yield of 20,000 psi. Bolts shall be electro-zinc plated steel with hex heads and hex nuts in accordance with ASTM A-307 and A-563, respectively. DESIGN Tapping valves shall be of Ihe non-rising stem type meeting all of the applicable requirements of AWWA C-500. NRS stem collars shall be cast integral with the stem and machined to size. The housing for the valve stem collar shall be machined. For size 16" and larger, the thrust bearing area shall be fully bronze lined. NRS valves in 4"-12" size shall be !urnished with two O-ring seals located above the thrust collar and one below. O-rings shall be set in machined grooves in the stem. The O-ring grooves shall not be less than the root diameter ol the stem threads. 14" and larger valves shall have two O- rings set in the seal plate, OS&Y valves shall be lurnished with conventional packing and adjustable gland. Disc for valves shall be cast iron, bronze faced. Bronze facing shall be machined after insertion into the disc lace. Valve port shall be free and full to allow cutter passage withoul interlerence. Disc spreaders for all valves shall be bronze. In addition. disc spreader pockets for valves and larger shall be bronze lined. Valve bodies shall have guides cast integrally to align the discs during travel. For valves 16" and larger, gearing and by-pass valves are recommended. Bronze rollers, Iracks and scrapers shall be furnished on valves 16" and larger intended for horizontal installalton in a horizontal line. Direction to open shall be counler-clockwise unless otherwise specified. PAINTING The inside and outside ol valves. together with the working parts except the bronze and machined faces. shall be coated in accordance with AWWA standards. MARKING Marking shall be in accordance with AWWA C-500 standards. to include the name of manufacturer, the year of manufacture, maximum working pressure and size of valve. Section 2 Page 5
