Services:
On this date, representatives of HBC Engineering met to review the quality of select fill material
being installed.
COMMENTS
On this date, representatives of HBC Engineering attended a site meeting with representatives of
Hill & Wilkinson and the Earthwork Contractor.
First was a review of the six (6) Plasticity Indices (PI) results from samples of select fill that
was being installed on Friday, March 1,2002. The area of installation was Grid lines 8.5 to 11 and
A to C.5. Six (6) samples were obtained from the in situ material and tested for Plasticity Index
(PI). Five (5) of the samples, 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, were found to be NomPlastic while sample 3 had a
PI of 3. Project specifications require a Pi between 6 and 15.
Three (3) options were available for the project:
Continue to install the material having a PI of "0" and modify each lift with approximately 4%
Cement, mixing same to accomplish the same gradations required for road base stabilization.
2. Bring in a Select Fill having a PI between 6 and 15.
Install a borrow material having a Pi >15 to finished grade. Moisture condition the material,
when installed, and achieve the required in-place density. Treat the top section, as indicated in
the Geotechnical Repod, with Lime accomplishing the required gradation and in-place density
for the top lift.
At the conclusion of the site meeting, it was unclear which option the Owner would choose.
