Re: Slope Stability Study
Gabion Wall
Villages of Coppell ILIA
coppell, Texas

Dear Mr. Tipton:
By: Engineering
Enclosed please find the results of our most recent computer print-
out for the slope stability analysis on the above referenced gabion
wall.
On March 18, 1992, we drilled two (2) soil core borings and
recovered samples to be laboratory analyzed for the purpose of
input into the stability analysis. The boring logs and test
summaries are also enclosed.
Our method of analysis comes in the form of a computer program by
Datasurge of Bradford, Maine. Bishop's Method is used in this
program to compute factors of safety for slopes. The theoretical
background and equations have bean discussed thoroughly and
published in many texts.
Several factors influenced the data input to this program. They
are as follows:
1. Text results revealed four (4) soil strata above bedrock
(Eagle Ford Shale).
2. The maximum slope to be considered comprised a one -to -one
(1:1) slope approximately 26 feet high.

•
• P.04
3. The (3 ) b naf ur one- half header
a three (3)
block at the top of the slope. This block acted as a
surcharge and reduced the factor of safety. The wall has been
redesigned with this block removed.
4. The water level fluctuates seasonally, but the level
producing the critical slope is normal pool which is input
into this data.
In conclusion, our latest run produced a factor of safety (F.S.)
of 1.130 which is the minimum F.S_ from a total of 8o trial failure
arcs. The lowest sixteen (16) arcs are shown on the output sheet
in the back of this report.
A factor of safety of 1.130 means that the wall should be safe from
sliding provided the slope is compacted according to plan prior to
placement of the gabion baskets and care is taken to prevent
erosion or undermining of the slope from above:
The factor of safety can be increased by placing rock rip -rap at
the toe of the gabion wall. This will prevent undermining and
erosion of the toe and will also add negative, or counter - active,
forces against the critical failure arc. We suggest the rip -rap
extend at least three (3) feet below normal pool water line.
I trust this is the information you desire; and if we can be of
further service, please call on us.
Respectfully submitted,
Inc.
