Farmers' Market Proposal
May 2002
Baek2round
A successful farmers' market can be a tremendous resource for a community. Benefits of
a Farmers' Market include an enhancement of a community center, cross-cultural
activity, positive economic revitalization, improvement of community identity and
availability of locally grown seasonal food. Consumers support local farmers, less use of
synthetic chemicals in food production, less packaging waste and reduced energy use in
transportation.
According to the UDSA, farmers' markets have increased 63% in 2000 since 1994. The
increase is a combination of 1) growers diversifying to keep family farms, 2) customers'
demand for pesticide-free and GMO-free food, 3) popularity of ethnic or specialty foods,
and 4) need for an overall quality of life in metropolitan areas to create vibrant
community centers.

Overcoming Obstacles:
1. Produce is a highly volatile product that is sensitive to the environmental conditions and is extremely
perishable.
2. Coppell's proximity to local fanners and other fanners' markets.
3. Old Coppelllacks a consumer base for a market start-up.
4. Lack of local vendors willing to come to an unestablished market
5. Will there be a Consultant Hired? The Old Coppell Master Plan has a strategic redevelopment initiative
that includes a Fanners' Market. The plan includes a year one work plan that assumes City staff would
work with a consultant experienced in fanners' market startup and operations.
6. Location and site development. Dirt work, ground work, awnings, signage, water, electricity,
restrooms, fencing, and dumpsters.
7. Compliance with the city of Coppell' s Planning and Zoning, Environmental Health, and Risk
Management..
