A total of three (3) passes of water injection were completed across the westernmost 550 feet of the building pad. This portion of the building pad was injected and tested in two parts. Area A was tested on February 12, 2003 and Area B was tested on February 18, 2003. A diagram is enclosed with this letter showing Area locations with respect to the overall building footprint, and an additional diagram is included indicating boring locations within each area. This letter summarizes our test results and recommendations. A total of 28 verification borings were drilled. Borings 1 through 18 were drilled in Area A and Borings 19 through 28 were drilled in Area B. The borings were drilled at locations selected in the field by Rone. Continuous Shelby tube samples were obtained to depths of 10 feet below the existing ground surface. The samples were wrapped in the field to preserve their moisture content and returned to our laboratory for testing. Laboratory testing included free -swell tests to aid in assessing swell characteristics of the injected soils, along with moisture content determinations and hand penetrometer strength tests. The laboratory test results are tabulated and enclosed with this letter. A summary of the swell test results are presented in the table below: Duke Realty Services, LP Rone Job No. 03 -7333 February 28, 2003 Page 2 Based on the swell test results, the available geotechnical information, and our observation of the injection process, it is our opinion the injected subgrade for Areas A and B of the project site has swell potential in excess of 1 inch required by the project specifications. The test results indicate the upper 4 to 5 feet of the clay soils at this site are relatively soft (hand penetrometer values less than about 3 tsf) and have a relatively low swell potential, while the soils below this level are relatively hard and have a relatively high swell potential. We recommend additional water injection passes be implemented in the lower half of the injection zone in Areas A and B (below a depth of about 4 to 5 feet). Areas A and B should be retested after injection is complete. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service to you for this project. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us.
