RE: Bethel School Road project # ST 02-02
Dear Mr. Zaccarelli:
This letter is a follow-up to our meeting concerning driveway access from the Coppell Post Office to Bethel
School Road. Currently, there are three driveways: 1) the eastern most driveway is utilized strictly by Postal
Service employees and trucks; 2) the middle driveway was the exit driveway for the drop-off box on the north side
of the Post Office; and 3) the western most driveway, the one closest to Denton Tap Road, is the access driveway
to the public parking area. As we discussed in our meeting, the proximity of the western most driveway to Denton
Tap Road creates an ongoing problem with cars entering and exiting the Post Office site due to other vehicles
stacked on Bethel School Road waiting to enter Denton Tap Road.
My goal in my initial conversation with you was to gain approval to eliminate the western most driveway and
allow all access to the eastern most driveway. It was during our meeting that l was informed that the Post Office
could not legally mix public traffic with truck traffic. After reviewing this problem further and walking the site, it
is my opinion that a new driveway could be constructed further east to separate the truck traffic from the public
traffic. Then your current eastern most driveway could be reconfigured to be used for public traffic. I have
attached a drawing that shows those changes.
In walking the Post Office site, it was obvious that the truck traffic is having difficulty using the current eastern
driveway off of Bethel School Road and also making the additional 90 degree turn interior to the parking lot. By
relocating the truck driveway further east and providing a larger radius off of Bethel School Road, trucks should be
able to make the turn into the site withoutjumping the curb.
During our conversation, it was my understanding that the Post Office has also been looking at this problem for
some time. Once you have reviewed the attached exhibit, I would like the opportunity to discuss this with you
again to see what possibilities exist potentially for the City and the Post Office to work together to bring about a
solution in the best interest of the City of Coppell.
If you have any questions concerning this issue please feel free to call me. If not I look forward to hearing from
you in the very near future.
Sincerely,
~Ov~
