M&H AWWA C509 Resilient Seated Gate Valve
· Unprecedented Protection Against Corrosion and Abrasion
· Wedge Completely Encapsulated with Rubber
· Body and Bonnet Coated Inside and Out with Fusion Bonded Epoxy
M&H Resilient Seat Gate Valves combine the benefits of
proprietary technology and quality workmanship, backed
by over 100 years of waterworks valvi ng experience.
The M&H RSGV offers the best of both the traditional IBBM
gate valve and the time-proven M&H "450" butterfly
valve--the full-port advantage of the gate and the bottle-tight
shut-off and throttling capability of the butterfly.
· Low torque operation.
· Positive shut-off.
· Extra assurance of dual body-gate seating.
· O-Ring seals above and below stem thrust collar.
· Unobstructed thru-port to maximize flow.
· Specially compounded M&H elastomer.
· Meets all requirements of AWWA C-509.
· Ten year limited warranty against defective materials or
workmanship.
And importantly, the entire valve body and bonnet, inside
and out, are fully coated with a proprietary fusion bonded
epoxy coating that offers unprecedented protection against
corrosion and abrasion, at no added cost, and fully meets
AWWA C-550. The wedge is fully encapsulated with a
vulcanized SBR rubber, specially compounded for long
memory life, durability, and protection against corrosion.
This durable coating protects against external corrosion and
prevents tuberculation and scale build-up in the waterway
tha! can inhibit the passage of flowing media and eventually
drive up pumping costs.
All in all, the combination of strength, durability, and
corrosion and abrasion resistance of this coating far
exceeds all comparable coatings for waterworks products
on the market today. Available in NRS and OS&Y, the
M&H RSGV is especially suited for potable water systems
and water and wastewater treatment applications.
POSITIVE SEALING
A dual rubber seal is formed between the rubber
encapsulated resilient wedge and the valve body to
guarantee drop-tight shut-off everytime.
The combination of true compression and dynamic
wedging of the gate is created without harmful sliding,
shearing or other wear-inducing action.
The massive vulcanized rubber seating edges on the gate
self-absorb normal wear and tear, assuring a positive seal,
even after years of service. The M&H RSGV will seal bubble-
tight to 250 psi working pressure, with the flow in either
direction. and the valve in any position.

EASE OF OPERATION
The (E~) RSGV has only two moving internal parts--the gate
and the stem.
The gate is fully supported throughout travel by an integrally
cast tongue and groove fit between it and the valve body.
Lugs on the gate fully engage the coated guides cast into
the valve body so the gate closes smoothly, without
"chatter", everytime.
This positive gate alignment, plus positioning and
engagement of the stem nut, virtually eliminate stem/.
binding, and provide balanced loads and low operating
torques. The (E~) RSGV is among the lowest in operating
torques of all available competitive type valves.
The operating mechanism is triple O-Ring
sealed to completely seal against leakage past
the stem. Two O-Rings are provided above the
thrust collar and one below. Upper O-Rings can
be replaced without removing the stem. .
Wedge design is one-piece cast iron with
integral lugs.
Vulcanized rubber coating completely
(,,-encapsulates wedge, lugs and
~tem bore.
Coated, internal body grooves provide
smooth travel path and assures positive
gate alignment.
FULL FLOW CAPACITY/DUAL SEATING

· Tinrio ,~c?sic:x~
· Pro'vc:n SeF~ICO
Type: Compression type, opening against line pressure.
Main valve on Traffic Model will remain closed should
hydrant be broken off by traffic accident.
Classification and Size: Hydrants are classified by the main
valve size, number and size of hose and pumper nozzles.
Hydrant sizes are designated as 4'/2 and 51/~ inches, size being
the inside diameter of the main valve seat opening.
Length: Hydrant lengths are determined by depth of trench
below ground level. Lengths are in multiples of six inches
Barrel: Upper section of barrel (nozzle section) contains the
hose and pumper nozzles. The water way is uniform in
diameter for entire length of barrel.
Hydrant Inlet: Hydrant shoe or elbow is provided with
flange or mechanical joint connection to fit connecting pipe.
All type shoes except ~anged are provided with lugs for
strapping. The two drain openings in the hydrant shoe are
bronze bushed. All shoes are protected from corrosion with
fusion bonded epoxy coating.
Hose and Pumper Nozzles: Threaded with fine thread and
screwed (not Leaded) into tapped openings in nozzle section
of hydrant. Hose and pumper nozzle caps are provided with
robber gaskets and chained to nozzle section
Operating Mechanism and Working Parts: Main valve
rod is made of steel and is bronze sheathed where it passes
through the one piece bonnet. Bronze retainer ring bushing is
permanently affixed into shoe. Main valve seat ring is
threaded into seat retainer ring providing bronze to bronze
assembly. Main valve seat material is rubber.
All working parts, including main valve assembly, are
removable through the top of hydrant without excavating.
Two positive acting non-corrodible drain valves are integral
parts of main valve assembly. All parts of hydrants of same
size and type are interchangeable with out any special fittings
Integral operating nut and weathershield provide tamper
resistant top works and protects the operating mechanism
from the elements. Also operating hold down is O-ring
sealed for added protection.
Dry Top: Operating threads are isolated from the waterway
by a seal plate having double O-rings. Operating nut has
lubricating hole in top for lubrication of operating threads
and thrust bearing.
Dry Barrel: When the valve of the hydrant is closed, two
drain valves in the hydrant shoe automatically open and
allow rapid and complete drainage of the hydrant barrel. this
dry barrel eliminates danger of damage to the hydrant by
freezing.
Materials of Construction: All iron parts are made of high
strength gray iron conforming to specification A-126, Class
B of the American Society for Testing Materials or ductile
iron. All non-corrodible metal parts are made of copper
alloys conforming to AWWA Standard C502 requirements.
Other materials are also of high quality for their respective
uses.
Shop Tests: Tested to 500 pounds hydrostatic pressure
supplied from the inlet side, first with main valve closed for
testing of valve seat; second, with main valve open for testing
of drain valves and entire hydrant.

THE M&H 129
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
For over 60 years the M&H 129 hydrant has been produced to protect property and lives.
Hydrants Produced in the 1930's are still able to be retrofitted with production pads built today.
Now, every modern hydrant feature is available on the 129 and we still can retrofit to 60 years old hydrants.
M&H has kept the user in mind-continuously upgrading, while maintaining pads interchangeability,
minimizing inventory and maximizing service life.
For the integrity of your system, specify M&H 129 fire hydrants with the assurance that our past reliability
will continue into the future...all compatible.
Further evidence of the 129 unquestionable superiority is attested by its 5 year limited warranty protection
on materials and workmanship.
Features and Benefits
BONNET DESIGN is a single unit component with integral lubrication
chamber completely isolating stem threads from any did or moisture.
The one-piece operating nut/weathershield discourages tampering and
repels outside weather elements that cause operating problems. A nylon
thrust bearing maintains low operating torques effectively throughout
hydrant life.
DUAL LUBRICATION is a user option afforded by the 129 for selection
of either grease or oil as operating mechanism lubricant. Standard fac-
tory procedure is to lubricate with grease. Oil is easily substituted in field by
removing operating nut/weathershield bolt and add oil through bolt hole
into reservoir. Either lubricant is contained in the chamber by two O-ring
seals and water cannot enter when hydrant is operating under pressure.
VEHICLE IMPACT protection is afforded by a split safety flange
connection at ground line. In the event of a traffic accident, the safety
flange breaks and the stem safety coupling separates allowing the above
ground hydrant assembly to fall away cleanly from the standpipe flange
without any damage to operating components. The 129 can also be rotated
360 for more desirable curb alignment of the nozzle outlets by simply loos-
ening the safety flange bolts and turning the nozzle section.
The 4-1/2" or 5-114" main valve opening assures high flow capacity.
The compression type main valve opens against water pressure and is
held shut by this pressure during repair or maintenance. Two drain valves
provide quick drainage of the hydrant standpipe following closure of the
hydrant. Those drains are self-flushing with each cycle of the main valve. A
bronze-to-bronze seat retainer insures easy removal of the main valve
should maintenance or repair be required. This is accomplished with a shod
disassembly wrench.
M&H Style 129 Hydrant Use and Care
After installing the hydrant, remove hose cap and
fully open hydrant, allowing the water to nm until
it becomes clear. This removes gravel, dirt or any
other foreign matter which might become.
embedded in the valve and cause leakage. If
water remaining in the hydrant does not drain out
quickly and completely after closing the main
valve, it is evident that the drain outlets have
become blocked. This can be easily corrected by
opening the main valve two full turns with the
hose caps screwed on tight. When the main valve
How to Increase Length
The material required to increase the length is
one extension piece, one hydrant md extension,
one breakable wd coupling with 2 clevis pins, 2
t,-',O-ring gaskets, one 2-piece solid flange and 8
stand bolts and nuts. Disassemble the hydrant
down to the ground flange and remove the upper
section of the hydrant wd, leaving the breakable
coupling bolted to lower section of hydrant rod.
Assemble new breakable coupling to top end of
hydrant rod extension and bolt extension piece
to standpipe. Connect top section of hydrant rod
into top of new breakable coupling and
reassemble.
is in this position, the drain valves are only
partially closed and the water pressure will flush
the drain outlets. We recommend that hydrants
be flushed at least once a year to clear the shoe of
any foreign matter. At the same time the hydrants
can be lubricated by means of lubricating hole in
the top of the operating nut, to insure easy and
perfect working order at all times.
Refer to AWWA Manual M-17 - "Installation,
Field Testing and Maintenance of Fire Hydrants"
for procedure.
