Soft or loose materials such as sand, gravel, bark, mulch or wood chips are not suitable. Cobblestone and other irregular surfaces having a texture that constitutes an obstacle or hazard, such as improperly laid flagstone, shall not be a part of accessible routes, spaces and elements. NOTE: Brick pavers are provided on the accessible routes of travel. Please ensure that the pavers meet the requirements of this section and Section 4.5.2 (Changes in Level) below. PLEASE ENSURE 4.5.2 CHANGES IN LEVEL Changes in level up to %" may be vertical and without edge treatment. Changes in level between %" and 1/2" shall be beveled with a slope no greater than 1:2. Changes in level greater than V2" shall be accomplished by means of a ramp that complies with 4.7 or 4.8. NOTE: It is difficult to evaluate this section with the information pro- vided in the preliminary plans. Sheet 5 appears to indicate that a cross- walk is provided using brick pavers and concrete curbs, but curb ramps are not provided. This practice presents an architectural barrier to those individuals who use wheelchairs and is unacceptable to the TAS and public law. Please provide additional information to verify compliance to ali requirements of this section with the submission of the final plans. Please note that curb ramps require surface textures and light reflective values (color) that contrast significantly with the adjacent pedestrian routes. Transition from ramps to walks, gutters, or streets shall be flush and free of abrupt changes.
