of the curb ramps are not noted in the plans provided for review. Please
ensure that the cross slopes of the repaired sidewalks do not exceed 2%.

sidewalks are provided, please ensure that cross slopes do not exceed
2%. The slope of public sidewalks may follow the slope of the road and

4;5 GROUND!~FLOOR SURFACES 4.5.1 GENERAL
Ground and floor surfaces along accessible routes and in accessible rooms and
spaces including floors, walks, ramps, stairs, and curb ramps, shall be stable,
firm, slip-resistant, and comply with section 4.5. Soft or loose materials such
as sand, gravel, bark, mulch or wood chips are not suitable. Cobblestone and
other irregular surfaces having a texture that constitutes an obstacle or hazard,
such as improperly laid flagstone, shall not be a part of accessible routes,
spaces and elements.
NOTE: Brick pavers are provided on the accessible routes of travel.
Please ensure that the pavers meet the requirements of this section and
Section 4.5.2 (Changes in Level) below.

Changes in level up to %" may be vertical and without edge treatment.
Changes in level between %" and 1/2" shall be beveled with a slope no greater
than 1:2. Changes in level greater than V2" shall be accomplished by means of
a ramp that complies with 4.7 or 4.8.

Curb ramps complying with 4.7 shall be provided wherever an accessible
route crosses a curb.
NOTE: It is difficult to evaluate this section with the information pro-
vided in the preliminary plans. Sheet 5 appears to indicate that a cross-
walk is provided using brick pavers and concrete curbs, but curb ramps
are not provided. This practice presents an architectural barrier to those
individuals who use wheelchairs and is unacceptable to the TAS and
public law. Please provide additional information to verify compliance
to ali requirements of this section with the submission of the final plans.
Please note that curb ramps require surface textures and light reflective
values (color) that contrast significantly with the adjacent pedestrian
routes.

shown in Fig. 11. Transition from ramps to walks, gutters, or streets shall be

Surfaces of curb ramps shall comply with section 4.5 above.
(1)Textures shall consist of exposed crushed stone aggregate, roughened con-
crete, rubber, raised abrasive strips, or grooves extending the full width and
depth of the curb ramp. Surfaces that are raised, etched, or grooved in a way
that would allow water to accumulate are prohibited.
(2) For purposes of warning, the full width and depth of curb ramps shall have
a light reflective value and texture that significantly contrasts with that of ad-
joining pedesthan routes.
4.7.5 SIDES OF CURB RAMPS
If a curb ramp is located where pedestrians must walk across the ramp or
where it is not protected by handrails it shall have flared sides; the maximum
slope of the flare shall be 1:10. Curb ramps with returned curbs may be used
where pedestrians would not normally walk across the ramp.
