This pipe, combining the physical strength of mild steel with the longevity of gray iron, also has the ability to flex under stress, making it less vulnerable to abnormal con- ditions under which other pipe materials may fail. Ductile iron is made by a metal- lurgical process which involves the addition of magnesium into molten iron. While the basic composition of the iron remains unaltered, the graphite structure becomes nodular rather than flake. The tensile strength is increased to that of mild steel, but above ail, the metal is now "DUCTILE". Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe is centrifu- gally cast in water-cooled metal molds. Rigid process control is exer- cised throughout the manufacturing cycle. Casting is followed by heat treatment in a continuous annealing oven after which the pipe passes through the various finishing opera- tions which include hydrostatic testing, cleaning, cement lining, coating and inspection. The extra strength and toughness of ductile iron offers a great margin of safety against service failures due to ground movement and beam stresses; and provides vastly increased resistance to breakage caused by rough handling during transportation and installation. High Tensile Bursting Strength Strength Qualities Long Life- inherent corrosion resis- tance assures many years of service in most soils Greater Flow Capacity-oversized inside diameter and high flow coeffi- cient provide more flow than similar sized substitute pipe products Strength, Ductilitl/and Toughness- capable of withstanding high internal pressures-heavy external loading- excellent resistance to impact and shock Easy Tapping and Field Cutting- Sharp, clean, strong threads are easily made in Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe, using standard tapping tools, even while the main is under pressure. Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe may be cut in the field with a milling type cutter or an abrasive saw and assembled with standard fittings. National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) listing under standard 61 applies to Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe. Minimum Physical Qualities: grade 60-42-10 iron tensile strength: 60,000 psi yield strength: 42,000 psi elongation: 10% Impact Corrosion Strength Resistance © 1997 Griffin Pipe Products Co 2 Griffin Pipe Products Co. Suggested Specifications Pipe shall be ductile iron manufac- tured in accordance with the require ments of ANSI/AWWA C151/A21.51. Push on joints and mechanical joints for such pipe shall be in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11. Pipe shall be Griffin or equal. Pipe thick- ness shall be designed in accordance with ANSI/AVVWA C150/A21.50 and shall be based on laying conditions and internal pressure as specified in the project plans. Fittings shall be ductile iron and in accordance with the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53, and ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10. Mechanical joints shall conform to ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11. Fittings shall be Griffin or equal. Pipe and fittings shall have cement mortar lining and seal coating, where applicable, in accordance with AN$1/AWWA C 104/A21.4. Special Linings and Coatings Epoxy linings and coatings are avail- able upon special order. Details are available from regional sales offices. Laying Lengths Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe is furnished in either 18 ft. or 20 ft. nominal lengths. We reserve the right to fur nish a limited number of shorter lengths as permitted by ANSI/AWWAC151/A21.51. We will always ship not less than the required footage on the order. We also reserve the right to ship a total footage of more than the order quan tity so as to allow the use of full length pipe without cutting. If any length of pipe must be furnished with an exact laying length, such require- ment must be specified at time of order. Polyethylene Encasement for Ductile Iron Pipe in Corrosive Soils Most soils encountered in the con- struction of underground ductile iron pipe lines do not cause corrosion of any magnitude. There are, however, some soils that are corrosive and can cause problems. Fortunately, reme- dies do exist. Soil surveys can be conducted to determine whether or not corrosive soils are to be expected in the area of excavation. Polyethylene encasement is easily accomplished if required. Polyethylene encasement is a proven method of protecting cast iron and ductile iron pipe in areas of severely corrosive soil. The protection is pro vided by isolating the pipe from the corrosive environment. A completely air and water-tight enclosure is not necessary. The dielectric capability of polyeth- ylene also provides shielding against stray direct current at most levels encountered in the field. Optionally, a four (4) mil thick high density cross laminated polyethylene tube or an eight (8) mil thick Iow den sity polyethylene tube is furnished in the flat tube widths listed at the right. More detailed information on poly- ethylene encasement is available upon request. Both material and installation procedures are standard ized in ANSI/AWWA C105/A21.5. Recommended Polyethylene Flat Tube Width by Pipe Size Nominal Griffin Pipe Products Co 3 Standard Dimensions and Weights *Thickness and O.D. tolerances shall be in accordance with ANSl/AW~VA C151/A21.51 and C111/A21,11 respectively t including bell Cement- Mortar lining in accor- dance with ANSI/AWWA Pipe is normally manufactured with a cement mortar lining. Above weights do not include lining. Standard lining thickness for 3" -12' diameter pipe is 1/16" min- imum: for 14' -24" diameter pipe is 3/32" minimum. Ductile Iron Sewer Pipe is the ideal selection for sewer force mains and deep bury collectors and interceptors. Compact Ductile Iron Fittings are available in many configurations and are usually furnished with Portland Cement linings. Compact fittings are designed to be used with modern ductile iron pipe and provide ductile's strength with significant weight savings. For severe service applications, duc- tile iron pipe with Snap-Lok Restrained Joints does the job along with Bolt-Lok Restrained Joints at Fittings connections. Griffin's restrained joint system is unique because readily available Ductile Iron Mechanical Joint Fittings are utilized. Field applied versions of Snap-Lok and Bolt-Lok are available. When lakes or rivers must be crossed, Snap-Lok Ductile Iron River Crossing Pipe is suited for the task because its ball and socket joints allow up to 15° deflection. GR97 22M
