Services: Drilled pier observation.
On this date, HBC/Terracon's technician arrived at the above referenced jobsite as scheduled for
drilled pier observation. See the attached sheet(s) for recorded data.
NOTE:
Pier D/1.4, the concrete placed in this pier hole had a concrete temperature of 99°F.
The concrete was placed with approximately a 3 inch slump. The concrete
personnel had to stand at the top of the chute on the concrete truck and push the
concrete into the pier hole.
HBC/Terracon's technician suggested to the contractor that it was not a good idea
to place this load of concrete and that it should be sent back to the batch plant. The
concrete personnel had already placed some of the concrete load into the pier hole.
The pier drillers refused to pull the reinforcing steel back out of the pier hole and auger
out the potentially bad concrete out of the pier hole. Therefore, to prevent a cold joint
in this pier, the contractor was forced to place the rest of the concrete into the
pier hole. The next concrete truck would have taken approximately an hour or
more before arriving at the jobsite. This concrete load was acting as if it was
wanting to flash (setup) on the concrete personnel. Pier D/4.1 was the only
pier that this load of concrete was placed in. The contractor sent the other half
of this concrete load back to the plant.
