RETAINING WALL DESIGN
STRUCTURAL ISSUES FOR MEETING WITH CITY
Date: 12/18/96
The major issue concerning the design of retaining walls are the existing and proposed
utilities. These utilities run pazallel as well as transverse to the retaining walls. Two
alternatives aze suggested.
1) ALTERNATIVE 1 -SPREAD FOOTING WALL
a) Footings above the utilities -Although the walls are shorter for this option, the
utilities aze inaccessible and may need casing. Also, the impact of additional loads
imposed on the utilities from the retaining walls needs to be analyzed.
b) Footings below the utilities -The impact of the additional loads will not be a factor
for this option. However, the height of walls will increase resulting in increased
costs. In addition, the existing utilities may have to be temporarily relocated.
2) ALTERNATIVE 2 -DRILLED SHAFT WALL
The drilled shaft walls will not impose additional loads on utilities. In addition,
relocation of utilities may also not be required. However, drilled shaft walls aze generally
more expensive than spread footing walls. An additional benefit is that the utilities aze
accessible.
