LOW PRESSURE AIR TEST FOR GRAV~FY SANITARY SEWER
Test Procedure:
Each section of sewer shall be tested between sucessive manholes.
Air shall be introduced into the pipeline until 4.0 psi gauge pressure has been reached.
Al mat time the Ilow of air shall be reduced and the internal air pressure shall be maintained
oetween 3.5 and 4.5 psi gauge for al leas~ two(2) minutes to allow the air temperature to come
to equilibrium with the temperature of the pipe wall~. Pressure in the pipe shall be constantly
mon[lored by a gauge and hose arrangement separate from 1he hose used to introduce air inlo
the line Pressure in the pipe shall nol be allowed to exceed 5 psi.
After the temperature has stabilized and no air leaks at the plugs have been found, the air pressure
shail be used to determine the time lapse required for the air pressure to drop to 2.5 psi gauge.
If Ihe time lapse required for the air pressure to decrease from 3.5 to 2.5 psi exceeds Ihat shown in
'~he following table, line pipe shall be presumed to be within acceptable limits for leakage
it me lime lapsed is less than that shown in the table, the contractor shall make corrections Id
reduce the leakage lo acceptable limits.

Plug all m_~_nhole entrances and exits other than the m~J~hole
top access using suitably sized pneumatic or mechanical
pipeline plugs. Install the vacuum tester head ass-mhly at
the top access of manhole. Attach vacuum pump to test head
and start p~ml~. O~en inlet/outlet ball valve and evacuate
the mmnhole to 10" Hg. (approximately negative 5PSIG, 0.3
bar) Close vacuum inlet/outlet ball valve and monitor
vacuum for specified test period.
