PRODUCT TECHNICAL DATA. SHEET
GABIONS - Gah anized and PVC
(PolyViny! Chloride)Costed
Gabions am baskets made of 8x10 double twisted st~J woven
wire mash, as Der ASTM A975-97 (Figs. 1, 2). Gabions are filled with
stones at the project site to for~l flexible, p~rmesbie, monolithic
structures such as retaining walls, channel linings, and w~irs for ~rosion
control proje:ts (Fig.
The steel wire used in the manufacture of the gabion Ls heavily
zinc coated soft temper steel. A PVC coating is then applied to provide
added protection for use in polluted environments wh~re soils or water
are acidic: in salt or flash water, or wherever the risk of corrosion is
present. The PVC coating has a nominal thickness of 0.09 in. (0.50 mm).
The standard specifications of mesh-wire are shown in Table 1.
The gabion is divided int~) celts by means of diaphragms
positioned at approximately 3 foot oantcrs (Fig.1). Jn old er to reinforce
the structure, ali mesh panel edges are selvcdged wi~
greater diameter (Table 3). Dimensions and sizes of PVC coated gabions
are shown in Table 2.
NJ t~.~s on wire must b~ Der~ormed prior to manufactunn$ the
me~h.
1. Tet~//e, $l).jrnSnUt: the wire used for the manufacture of ga blahs
and the lacing wire, shatl have a tensile strength bct'w~n 54,000-
70,000 psi (372-470 MPa) according to ASTM A641-g?.
'Wim re tolerances (Table 3) are in accordance with ,%STM A641~97.
2. E/or, arian: Elongation shall not be less than 12%, in accordance
with ASTM A370-97. Test must be carried out on a sample at least 1£ in.
(30 ca) long.
3. Z/nc co~t~ns': minimum duantities of zinc shown at Table 3 meet
the recluirements of ASTM A641-97, Class III soft temlger coating.
4. Ad/~'~ion of zinc; tha adhesion of the zinc coating to the wire
shaft be such that, when the wire is wrapped six tums around a mandrel
having four times the diameter of the wire, it does not flake or crack
when rubbing it with the bare fingers, in accordance with ASTM A641-97.
