Sandy Lake Road Project #ST 93-02
Mockingbird Road Closure
At the October 24, 2000 City Council meeting, staff presented information concerning the safety
of the Sandy Lake Road / Mockingbird intersection. To date there has been one accident and
several near misses at the intersection. The safety concerns are: the lack of sight visibility for the
motorists on Sandy Lake Road to see vehicles entering from Mockingbird and motorists on
Mockingbird being able to see on-coming traffic on Sandy Lake Road.
The contractor has stated that he will begin paving again during the first week of November. If
all goes as planned, the eastbound paving will be completed from Samuel to MaeArthur Blvd.
prior to Thanksgiving. This will allow the contractor to transfer eastbound traffic from the old
Sandy Lake Road section to the new paved Sandy Lake Road section between Thanksgiving and
Christmas. At that time, the intersection of Mockingbird and Sandy Lake Road can be reopened.
I apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you both in your ability to access Sandy Lake
Road and for any increase in traffic on your residential street during this time frame. There are
numerous options available to the traveling public as opposed to utilizing Mockingbird at Sandy
Lake Road. Those options include Eagle, Swallow, Sparrow, Oriole, Cherrybark, Sugarberry,
Raven and Quail (see exhibit). Also, motorists could elect to avoid Mockingbird as a cut through
from Sandy Lake Road to Belt Line Road.
Again, I apologize for the inconvenience and if you have any questions concerning this issue
please feel free to contact the Engineering Department at 972/304-3679.
Sincerely,
Kenneth M. Griffin, P.E.
