Thc report contains the original seismograph records obtained fi'om heavy equipment operations along with a comparison of the recorded vibrations to thc latest recommended U.S. Bureau Mines (USBM) Variable Particle Velocity vs. Frequency Limi'ts Report of Investigations (RI) 8_07 (Nov., 1980). Pertinent data, seismograph locations, test results, and thc original seismograph records are included at tiao end oflhis report. A discussion of thc vibration levels measured with respect to thc damage criteria is included in this report. The rccorded ground vibrations satisly the Variable Particle Vclocity vs. Frequency Limits recommended by the USBM RI-8507 (Nov. 1980). Crow, over Assistant Area Manager Western Regional Manager ,5c VIBRA-TECH September 3, 2004 GROUND VIBRATION AND AIR-BORNE EFFECTS STUDY FOR MASTEC NORTH AMERICA FORCE MAIN LINE D SEWER PRO,1ECT COPPEI,E, TEXAS SEPTEMBER 1, 2004 PURPOSE The propose of this study was to measure thc ground vibrations and air-bome effects produced by tile construction activitics of Mastcc North America on September 1, 2004 at the Force Main Line D Sewer Project along McArtbur Road in Coppcll, l'exas. Thcsc results were lhen compared to nationally accepted criteria or applicable regulations governing tiao event. PROCEDURE The prqject consisted of heavy cqnil)ment operations (ldcco 6x6 D'iplex Pump - Single Action Rccylcer with a 6,000 gallon surface system /'ccd by 6x5 cenlril'ugal pumps and a American Directional Drill DD-140B) involved m thc Force Main Lilac D Sewer Project along McArthur Road. Two construction locatioos were monitored. Tile South site consisted of monitor locations A C and the North site consisted o£ monitor locations D-F (see attached maps). The seismograph xvas monitoring in wavcform mode for the attcnnation study and in histogram mode for locations along the brick wall. llistogram mode takes a sample at predetcrnainecl intervals and stores them internally displaying thc peak readings l'or thc time monitored. Tables listing the recording locations and peak particle velocities for all tests can bc found at the end o£this report. THE SEISMOGRAPII The Vibra-Tech seismographs arc four-channel recorders, wlfich directly measure pmq. icle velocity in three nrutually perpendicular dircctions. "Particle Velocity" is defined as "bow fast a particlc is moved by passing waves, measured itl inches per second". The Ibm-th channel is employed £or voice comlnents and/or nloniloring air ovcrprcssurc. On site peak levels arc displayed at the conclusion of each event with the event data being internally stored. The data, stored on magnetic tape, data diskettes or tine seismograph% internal memory (when trigger levels are exceeded), is later processed into analog printouts. Analog representations of this data are included in the appendix at thc end of this report. The first ground vibration trace is labeled "transvcrse" aod rcprcscnts horizontal motion at right angles to the vibration source. The second represents "vertical" particle velocity and is so labeled. The third is labeled "longitudinal" and represents horizontal motion along a direct line between thc recorder and tile energy source. Calibration int'omaation is supplied for each recording. VlBRA-TECH® RECOMMENDED VIBRATION I.IMITS Seismological researcb by tiao U.S. Bureau of Minos (USBM), lbrcign investigative groups, and individual scislnologists have established criteria relating tho occurrence of structural damage to certain fi'cqucncics and levels ofgrotmd motion. USBM Report of investigations (RI) 8507t states that residential structt~ros arc most prone to damage as a result of'vibration energy xvitbin thc frequency range of 4-12 bert×. Within this range, a 0.5-inch per second maximum particle velocity is recommended to preclude 'lbresbold' damage to tho plaster-on wood-lath interior portions o£oldcr structures. Threshold damage is dcfincd by the USBM as thc loosening of paint, small plaster cracks at joints between construction elements, or the lengthening of old plaster cracks. A maximum of 0.75 incb pcr second is recommendcd fbr tile protection of modern drywall interior construction. Thc damage threshold is normally considerably higher l'of load bearing or other sh-uctural portions cfa house. Above I2 hertz, tile allowable vibration level increases its the fi-equcncy increases, up to 40 hertz. Above 40 bcrtz, a constant 2.0 inches per second level is recommended to protect tiao interior walls and ceilings of structures, regardless of construction material. The vibration analyses of` lbo recordings arc plotted on graphic representations at the cad of' this report. It should be notcd that it is almost impossible, itl actual practice, to visually dctcrminc if the recorded peak vibration on a typical seismogram is actually within thc Bureau's 4-12 hertz range. This is becausc ground vibration is usually a complex mixture of' many frequencies, which cannot be accurately separated by visual analysis cfa seismogram. Proper implementation of the Bureau's limit can bt accomplished by a computerized technique, which analyzes thc seismographic data in terms of both peak particle velocity and frequency. 1. Investigations have established that thc most easily damaged portion of a structure, duo to air pressure, is the window glass. These investigations have also determined that windows of thc type normally £ound in residential structures should be able to withstand pressures of 1.0 lbs/in2 (170 dB) when properly installcd, and even m thc worst situation ora pane under pressure should be able to withstand 0.1 lbs/in2 (150 dB). Structural damage to a building as a result of' air concussion would generally occur only after extensive damage to windowpanes. The USBM has concludcd in its RI-8485 (Structural Response and Damage Produced by Airblast fi'om Surfacc Mines)2, bascd on a minimal probabilily of lhe most superficial ty3~e of damage in a residential-type structure, any oftlne tbllowing represent safe maximum airblast levels: 0.1 Hz high-pass system ................................................................................ 134 dB 2 Hz high-pass system ................................................................................... 133 dB 5 or 6 Hz high-pass system ........................................................................... 129 dB C-slow (events not excccding 2-sec. duration) ............................................. 105 dB All Vibra-Tech Tape Series, Evcrlcrt 11 and Multiseis Scismogral~hs have a 5 Hz higlYpass system. Thus, fi'om the above chart, line recommended sa£e air blast limit utilizing this system is 129 dB. The Vibra- Fech Evcrlert 6000, Multiseis V, Everle~t V, Ve and Ill Seismographs have a 2 Hz higln- pass syslem; thus the recommended safe limit utilizing this system is 133 dB. A-TECH,, COMMENTS It is not unusual to receive connplaints as a result of' heavy equipment operations. Vibra-Tcch's experience indicates that complaints can be atttribuled to one or a combination oflhe following: q'bc human body can sense velocities as low as .03 or .04 inches per second. Tlne dcgrcc of'perceptibility, however, is not a reliable indication of whether or not vibration damage is possible or likely. Air bomc concussion and associated noise can bc quite startling, especially wirer unexpected, and concussion as well as ground vibration can cause perceptible motion witbin buildings. Unless the concussion is suf`licicnt to produce extensive window breakage otlncr concussion danrage to buildings is not possible. Most, if` not all, l~omes have cracks in plastered walls and ceilings. Moreover, tlneir number and lengtln usually increase with lime as a result of many factors. These lhctors include settlement, fatigue, swelling, and shrinking of wooden members with moisture changes, and many others. The USBM lnas published a list of'tbrty causes of cracks in masonry and plastered ceilings and ,.,,'ails, which arc related lo construction and design practices, found in many lnomcs.
