Simplicity, sturdiness and water-tightness of the system are built into the syste~n by design. Taking advantage of a background of more than 100 years e×perience with pipe aim pipe connecting systems, U.S Pipe made a thorough study of existing joining systems and requirements of pipe users. The resuhs of this study showed the need fo~ a simple, economical and reliable method Gl assembling pipe. A m~mbe~ ot new desig~m were dev~ed. A rigorous mstb~g process resulted in fl~e selection of the ~TON JOINT Pipe System. After selection of the system, TYTON JOINT Pipe were then suhjected to further testing designed to simulate extreme installation and service conditions wblch might be encoumered in the field, h was only after these tests proved completely satisfactory and were confirmed by Iield installations thai the decision was made to market TYTON JOINT Pipe in 1955 Convir~cing proof Gl its wide acceptance is shown by the fao that more than 95% of the p~pe now sold by this company is TYTON .JOINT Pipe The TYTON~ Gasket a circular rubber gasket whkh has a ~T~oclified bulb shape in tross section~is lhe orgy ANSI/Akk~¥A C111/A21.1 ] &~bber ~ar~etjoiz~foz ~UCtlJp-]FOn Pzo~ure Pipe and Fittings. Joints are only as water-tight as they are clean, if the joint is soroewhat difficult to assemble, inspect for proper gasket positioning, adequate lubrication, and foreign matter in the .joint. Figure 1 Insertion of Gasket i.e, mud, sand, cinders, gravel, pebhles, trash, frozen material, etc The gasket seat should be tbo~ oughly inspected t¢~ be cerlain it is clean. Foreign may cause a leak The gas ket must be wiped clean with a clean cloth, flexed, and then placed imo the socket with the rounded bulb end emering f'i[st Loopmg the gasket in lhe initial inserlion will facilitate seating the gasket heel evenly around the remlne~ seat Smaller sizes require only one loop For larger sizes, additional loops may be required: 42" through 54", four to six Ioopsl 60" and 64', six or more loops. When installing TYTON JOINT Pipe in subdmezing weatbeL lhe gaskets, prior to dtair use. musl be kept at a temperature ol at least 40°F by suitable meat~s, such as storing in a heated area cn keeping them immersed in a tank of warm wate~ If the gaskets are kept in warm water, they should be dried bethre placing in the pipe socket. Figure 2 Application of Lubricant A thin film of TYTON JOINT~ Lubricant should be applied to the inside su] face of Ihe gasket, which wiI] come in contact with the plain end of the pipe. Spray-on lubricants should not be used as it may nol provide sufficient lubricity. The plain end of the pipe must be cleaned of all for eign matter on the out side from the end lc) the stripes. Frozen materials may cling to the pipe in cold weather and nqust be removed A thru film of lubricant is applied to the outside of the plain end for about 3" back fi'om the end. ~o not allow the plait] end to touch the ground or trench side afte~ lubricating since f~relgn maUm may adhere to the plain end and cause a leak Figure 3 Initial Entry of Plain End in Socket Tbe plain end of Ihe pipe should be aligned and carefully entered into tfle Figure 4 Completely Assembled Joint Joint assembly shcn fid be completed hv lotting the plain end ~-~-- -~ of the entering pipe ,, past the gasket (which is thereby compressed) until the stripe vvfll have disap- and the front edge of dqe second stripe will be approximately flush ~vith the belJ face. If assembly is not accomphshed with the application of reason- able torte by the methods indicated, the plain end of the pipe should be removed to check for the proper positioning of tile gasket, adequate lubrication, and removaJ of foreign matter in the joint *NOTE: When usbag FIELD LOK 350® Gaskets or pipe with specia} li~ttngs, assemble the joint until the inside edge of the tn-st painted st~'ipe (or thc assembly m~'k) is flush with the bell face TP 2 Assembly of TYTON JOINT® Pipe (Continued) Procedures outlined in figures 1-3 on page TP 2, showing the assembly of TYTON JOINT® Pipe, should be followed before proceeding with the methods shown below. Backhoe Method of Assembly A backhoe may be used to assemble pipe ol intermediate and larger sizes. The plain end of the pipe should be care f~flly guided by hand into the bell of tim previously assem- bled pipe, The bucket of the backhoe may then be used to c~-efuliy push the pipe until fully seated. A timhe~ header should be used between tbe pipe and the backhoe bucket to avoid damage to the pipe. ~gudon. Avoid "slamming" ll~e pipe home to prevent damage to lining material inside the bell at the back of the socket Crowbar Method of Assembly Smaller sizes of pipe may he assembled using a crowbar as a lever and pushing against the face of Ihe bell Come-along Method of Assembly Installers may prefe~ to use come alongs to assemble pipe of all sizes Two (2) 3/4 ton chain hoists. 24 feet of chain and ~wo (2) bell choker slings for 4" 24" sizes or two (2) 1 1/2 ton (ndnimum) cbain hoists for 30" 64" s~zes Alternate Method of Assembly TYTON JOINT Pipe is to use a backhoe to push against th~ I~ce of the bell end of the pipe to be assembled. Occasionally, line writh the pipe and it is, therefore, difhcult to develop chain or cable is hooked around the bell of the previously laid pipe The spigo~ eud ol the pipe to be assembled is fiist inserted as far as possible inlo the bell end of the previously end of the pipe to be laid One such rigging is made h'om a tong cable with a choker on one end and a chain grab hook on tbe other end with a sliding choker hook between the two other hooks. ~ second seclion of tbe rigging is a shorter chain with a wide throat hoisting book on one end Tbe cable is first "choked around tbe bet1 of the previously laid pipe using the fixed choker book ~be chain is booked into the bell end ol the pipe to be laid. The cable is hooked to the chain with the grab hook The connected length of tl~e rigging can thus be adjus[ed with ~he connection between the cable grab hook and tbe cbain T ~e pipe assembly is made by lifting up on the sliding choker book. Note: This mit od s~ould not be employed when installing FIELD LOK 350® Gaskets since alignment of the joinl cannot be assured For the proper installation pracbce, refer ~o U.S. Pipe Brochure (BRO 080), F/ELD LOK 3~ Gasket ~int Re,q~aim fo~ 4" 24" Ductile/ton Pipe For [4~stvwate~; F~)~ ~-m~tJon snd ~dusu-ia] App]]cstiom few rules of thumb: Angle 'A' should be no gleate~ than 15 degrees. Angle 'B' should be h'om 45 to 60 degrees. Tile sliding choker book should be located ffonq 2 to ~ f~el troin the bell of I he previously laid pipe. 1-~ iai assemlfly may be made to get a "feel" for the correct amount of slack Io be left in the rigging and the proper A f~w precautions: i The smallei the angle 'A'. the larger will he the assembly Force and the tension in tbe rigging. The assembly force and th~' tension will generally range from 2 to 10 times tile weight of tine pipe being assembled These forces are at a maxn7mm when the assembly is bottomed out and lift is still being applied lo the rigging To minimize the loads on the rigging, it is recommended that the assembly be made slowly and the assembly stopped as soon as the }oint is bouomed out. 2 Tbe rigging should be properly designed to accommodate the diameter, length, and weight of the pipe on the,lob and the loads previously described TP 3 Assembly of TYTON JOINT® Pipe (continued) Field Cut Pipe Figure 11. When pipe are cut in tbe field, the cut end may be readily conditioned so that it carl be used to pnake up the next .joint. The outside of the cut end should be beveled with a porlable grinder about 1/4 inch at an angle of about 30 degrees (Figure IlL This operation removes any sharp, rough edges which otherwise might damage the gasket. VV'ben Ductile h-on pipe 14" and largel is to be cul in tbe field, tile material should be ordered as "GAUGED FULL LENGTH." Pipe Ihat is "gauged full length" is specially marked to avoid confushm. The ANSI/AWWA standard for Ductile Iron pipe reqmres faOory gauging of the spigot end Accordingly, pipe selected for field cutting should also be field gauged in the location ot the cut and ensmed to be within the tolerances shown in Table 1. In the field a mechamcal joint gland can be used as a gauging device. MEGALUG: THE PRODUCT OF PREFERENCE SINCE 1984 _Since 1984, engineers and corrtractors designing and Iling water and wastewatel pipelines and systems have ,ne to rely on the EBAA Series 1100 MEGALUG Mechanical Joint Restraint as the "Product of Preference" for effectively and economically restraining ductile ~ron pipe connections above or below ground MEQALUG Mechanical Joint Restraints replace external restraints such as cumbersome concrete thrust pie(ks and corrodible metal tie rods creating a quicker, safer and more economical installation Major testing laboratories agree as the 3" through 24" sizes are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed, and the 3" through 12" sizes are Factory Mutual (FM) approved. 0 For use on all classes of ductile iron pipe (PCSSO through PC150 and CL56 through CLSO), for practically any application including valves, hydrants and pipe, the MEGALUG Mechanical Joint Restraint effectively and safely performs without damage to the p~pe or cement linings. THE MEGALUG GRIPPING WEDGE... PERFORMANCE PROVEN The wedge style Megalug des~ga reacts te the amount of force acting on the joint. Wherr each wedge is set, the wedge teeth penetrate the pipe's outer aurfa(e, aud wedge does aot move on tire pipe. There is very little change in this interface until the wedge movement begins ius~de the pocket of the main casting. Once the wedge starts mowng, the formation of the buttress begins. ~ "danP' of material (the wedge ~ssl()n} is cold formed ~s the wedgln~ .... 4RCM~' ~,on confinues It the force of pressure MOVEMENT acUnEonthejomtisreleased, thewedge After the wedge has moved to lite back of moves back to near ~ts ong hal position, the pocket at the maximuro pressure or rhis engages the reserve coatrolled load, the wedge buttress are m shear The The RCM is available even with severe cyclic loads. This has been tested to very high- pressure differentials and the wedge inlpresslons look the same as if a single test had been performed. Typmally, the depth of pipe wall penetration, or wedge impression at around 25,000 peunds of force per wedge (200 psi on a six ~nch and 150 psi on a twelve inch) is 003". Finally, at roughly twice that force the penetraUon is; around 005" At these high pressures, there is no affect on the design thickness of ductile iron p~pe made aLcording to AWWA C150. The lack of darnage to the cement lining clearly '~ indicates that the thrust load is primarily longitudinal. This ability to move m the pocket allows lot angular llexibilily as well as Iongituctina[ Mechanical Joint Restraint Sample Specification Restraint devices for mechanical joint fittings and appurtenances (onformingto either ANSI~AWWA Cl11/A21.11 or ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53, shall conform to the following: .__Design Restraint devides for oominal pipe sizes 3 inch through 48 inch shall consist of multiple gripping wedges incorporated irrto a follower gland meeting the applicable requirements of ANSI/AWWA Cl10/A2110. The devices shali have a working pressure rating of 350 psi for 3 16 tach and 250 psi for 18-48 inch. Ratings are for water pressure and must include a minimum safety'factor of 2 to i m all sizes. Material Gland body, wedges and wedge actuating components shall be cast from grade 65-45 12 ductile iron material in accordance with ASTM A536. For applications requiring restraint 30 inch and greater, an alternate grade of iron meeting the material requ~rereents of ASTM A536 is acceptable, providing the dewce meets all end product performance requirements. Ductile iron gripping wedges shall be heat treated within a range of 370 to 470 BHN. Three (3) test bars shall be incrementally poured per production shift as per Underwdter's Laboratory (UL) specifications and ASTM A536. Testing for tensile, yield and elongation shall be done in accordance with ASTM E8 Chemical and nodularity tests shall be performed as recommended by the Ductile iron Society, on a per ladle basis. Traceability An identification number consisting of yearr day, plant and shift (YYDDD)(plant designation)(Shift number), shall be cast into each gland body. All physical and chemical test results shall be recorded such that they can be accessed via the identification number on the casting. These Material Traceability Records (MTR's) are to be made available, in hard copy, to the purchaser that requests such documentation and submits his gland body identificabon number. Production pieces that are too small to accommodate individual numbering, such as fasteners and wedges, shall be controlled in segregate inventory until such time as all quality control tests are passed These component parts may then be released to a general inventory for final assembly and packaging. All components shall be manufactured and assembled in the United States. The purchaser shall, with reasonable notice, have the right to plant visitation at his/her expense. Installation Mechanical joint restraint shall require conventional tools and installation procedures per AWWA C600, while retaining full mechanical joint deflection during assembly as well as allowing joint deflection after assembly. Proper actuation of the gripping wedges shall be ensured with torque limiting twist off nuts. TOOLS MEGALUGS install using an ordinary ~ wrench (box, ratchet, or aindriven), ~ because the torque limiting, twist-off ~"~'~ nuts auL. omatically shear during -~ tightening when the proper torque is reached. The same i~A wrench used to ~' tighten the T-bolts on the 4 throug 24" s~zes can be used to tighten and shear the twist off nuts in all sizes. If removal becomes necessary, a hex head remains so the screws can be loosened, and retightened with a torque indicating wrench. During removal, the wedges are held in place by retainer clips. DEFLECTION -- The MEGALUG gripping wedges provide resiliency to your pipeline design. In addition to deflecting as much as allowed bythe mechanical joint during installation, it can also deflect after assembly: ,izes of 12" and below are capable of up to 3 degrees of deflection after installation (depending on the preset deflection.) The :].4" and 16" sizes are capable of 2 degrees deflection The 18" through 24" sizes are capable of 1.5 degrees deflection. The 30'r through 48" sizes are capable, 1 degree deflection. STEEL PIPE The 1100 Series MEGALUG can be used to restrain 3" 8" SCH 40 or 80 steel pipe when joining to mechanical appurtenances. It can also be used on steel pipe in all sizes if the pipe's outside diameter is the same as the ductile iron pipe and its thickness is equal to or greater than PC350 ductile iron pipe in sizes of :16 inch and below and PC250 ductile ~ron pipe 18 inches and above. CAST IRON PIPE Grey ~ron pipe diameters are often larger than ductile iron pipe diameters. The Series 1100 MEGALUG restraint may be ised with grey iron pipe having standardized cast iron O.D. per C150 and C151, and with pit cast Classes "A" and "B" without modification. Use of the Series 1100 with pit cast grey iron Classes "C" and "D" will require oversizing the MEGALUG. More information on this is explained in detail in "Connections Bulletin DI-i". int restra! a stand motor lbs. Cc :iOad Installation Instructions The Series 1100 Megalug® joint restraint is designed for use on ductile iron pipe conforrrling to ANSI/AWWA C151/A2~ .5~ (all thickness classes)"when restraining mechanical joint pipe or fittings. Clean the socket and the plain end. Lubrication and additional cleaning should be provided by brushing both the gasket and the plain end with soapy water or approved pipe lubrication meeting the requirements of ANSI/AWWA Cl11/A21 11, just prior to slipping the gasket onto the plain end for joint assembly. Place the gland on the plain end with the lip extension toward the plain end, followed by the gasket. * 3. insert the pipe into the socket and press the gasket firmly and evenly into the gasket recess. Keep the joint straight dunng assembly. * 4. Push the gland toward the socket and center it around the pipe with the gland lip against the gasket. Insert bolts and hand tighten nuts. Make defleotion after joint assembly but before tightening bolts. . Tighten the bolts to the normal range of bolt torque (45 60 ftdbs for 3". 75 90 It lbs for 4" through 24", 100-120 ft lbs for .'gO" and 36". and 120 150 ft-lbs for 42" and 48") while at all times maintaining approximately the same distances between the gland and the face of the flange at all points around the socket. This can be accomplished by partially tightening the bottom bolt first, then the top bolt, next tile bolts at either side, finally the remaining bolts. Repeat tile process until all bolts are within the appropriate range of torque. The use of a torque indicating wrench will facilitate this procedure. Tighten the torque limiting twist off nuts in a clockwise direction (direction indicated by arrow on top of nut) until all wedges are ~n firm contact with the p~pe surface Continue tightening ul an alternating manner until all of the nuts have been twisted off FOR MORE INFORMATION if removal is necessary, utilize the 5/8" he) heads provided. If reassembly is required, assemble the joint m the same manner as above, tighten the wedge bolts to 90 ft lbs. If the Series 11OO restraint is removed from the pipe, be sure that all of the collar bolts and wedges are in place before the restraint is reassembled. * These steps are requirements of AWWA. The valve housing must be installed below the frost line which prevails for the area of installation. The valve housing has a drain hole which drains the casing when the hydrant is shut off. In effect, there is no water in the casing dudng non-use periods. Since water from the drain hole is normally allowed to drain into the ground, the valve housing should be set in a bed of gravel. Water drained f~om the casing can then seep into the ground. Some locations which require Non-Freeze Post Hydrants cannot tolerate water draining from the drain hole. Examples are parking garages, plazas and roof decks used for recreational purposes. Often in these types of applications the valve housin§ will protrude into a finished area which is not subject to freezing temperatures. To eliminatB ~he problem of water drainage in this type of installation, Smith can supply a tapped drain hole in the valve housing. Through this tapped drain hole, ~e water from the valve housing can bo pipt~t to a Suihab~e drein.
