RE: Work Session/Construction Zone A~ivisory Speed Plan for Sandy
The Sandy Lake Road reconstruction project began in October 1998 and is scheduled m end in March
2000. The limits of construction for the proje :t are Denton Tap Road on the west and MacArthur
Blvd. on the east. As a requirement of the pi )ject, the contractor is to maintain two lanes open to
traffic throughout the construction. This is x)nsistent with the existing conditions with the only
difference being construction activities near thl roadway. It has been observed that drivers are driving
at unsafe speeds through the construction ~ the. As a result, Engineering staff is recommending
implementation of an advisory speed plan to/reduce speeds on Sandy Lake Road during construction
periods. !
The existing regulatory, or posted, speed
speed limit establishes the maximum allm
Department. The advisory speed plan do~
does include establishing an advisory spee
speed is not regulatory in nature, but is:
during construction activities. Advisory ,~
speed." Also proposed is the installation
to further encourage compliance with the
proposed advisory speed sign placement.
Staff will be available to answer any questi
imit along Sandy Lake Road is 35 mph. The regulatory
able speed, subject to speed enforcement by the Police
not propose changing the posted speed limit. The plan
limit of 25 mph along Sandy Lake Road. This advisory
ntended to encourage drivers to slow to a reduced speed
~ can be used as evidence of ``driving at an unsafe
'Df "Traffic Fines Double" signing along Sandy Lake Road
advisory speed. The attached exhibit is a layout of the
