DAVIS
Color Standards for the Concrete Industry
COLOR CONCENTRATED PIGMENT
Davis Color Concentrates are pu re mifleral oxide pigment powders; mixed in
to give concrete versatility, lasting color and appeal.
They contain no fillers or admixtures and are manufactured to strict
tolerances to maintain color uniformity. Davis Color Concentrates are packed
in One-Bag One-Yard sizes and lower priced 50 lb. bulk bags. Davis pure
oxide concentrates meet ASTM C-979 and are lightfast, lime proof and
weather resistant.
Davis 807 and 8084 are specially treated carbon blacks for rapid mixing
and higher tinting strength. Concrete colored with 807 and 8084 requires
care (see limitations) but remains the
MOST ECONOMICAL of our colors.
Davis Color Concentrates are for-
mulated for mix-in use only. They should
not be sprinkled or dusted on to the
concrete surface.
ARE THERE OTHER COLORS?
Different shades of the colors on this
card can be made by adding more or less
concentrate powder with each sack of
cement than indicated. We also make a
wide spectrum of other colors, match
colors and can custom blend to meet
most color schemes or samples with appropriate lead time. Light or pastel
colors are very hard to achieve in naturally gray concrete cnless white cement
is substituted for the gray cement in the mix.
KEY TO SUCCESSF~II COLORED CONCRETE
Colored concrete is a lasting asset which will add value to your home or
development project. Unsuccesslul colored concrete jobs often stad with the
belief they are no different than other jobs. Successful colored concrete does
not require skills different than used on other jobs, it requires attention to
detail, proper planning and above all UNIFORMITY, Uniformity of raw
materials, site conditions, placing and finishing methods and curing. The
next section outlines details which should be followed to maximize the
uniformity of colored concrete.
AT THE HATCH PLANT
The same cement, aggregate and fine materials should be used throughout
the job. Cement and aggregate color changes must be avoided.
The content of cement, aggregate, fines, pigment and water must be
kept consistent from Icad to Icad. The pigment to cement ratio should be the
same on jobs requiring multiple mix designs.
Maintain slum p at 4" or 5". The addi-
for pump mixes will cause the concrete
to be pale or "washed out". ~f higher
slump concrete is required, a water reduc-
ing or plasticizing admixture should be
used instead of adding water.
Calcium Chloride set accelerator
should not be used.
Add proper pigment weight into
mixer afteraggregate, cement, water and
other admixes (if specified). Mix at charg-
ing speed for at least 5 to 10 minutes (50 to 100 revolutions).
Schedule deliveries for consistent mixing times from Icad to Icad.
Atter pour, clean mixer thoroughly to prevent color carry-over.
AT THE JOB SITE
Subgrade must be uniformly graded, compacted and thoroughly moistened.
The subgrade must provide a bed for a slab of uniform thickness without
drawing water out of the fresh concrete.
Water should not be added to the mix, into
pumps, onto the fresh surface or onto finishing tools :
or brooms. This will cause color to pale or discolor. ~
Schedule job and crew size to provide ample time
for troweling. I
Troweling may begin after the disappearance of
bleed water and should be completed while the concrete is
stiff yet still plastic. So should brooming. Late or hard troweling (and edging)
will cause "burning" and dark spots.
Do not sprinkle pigment, cement or mortar onto the fresh surface.
Broom or rotary finishes (rough finishes) are less likely to discolor than
smooth troweled finishes.
CONING (DRYING) AND HARDENING
Uneven curing = uneven drying = uneven color. Too rapid drying will produce
a weak surface prone to shrinkage cracks, dusting and premature wear.
The surface of colored concrete should be prevented from drying for at
least 5 days by the application of a very thin coat of Davis W-1000 Clear Cure
& Seal or Color Seal II. (informational product sheets available separately)
The substitution of water curing, plastic membrane sheets or other
curing methods or products can result in surface discolorations.
Wood, sand and other objects placed on fresh concrete may cause discolora-
tion.
Surface evaporation offen leaves behind a white powdery residue (ef-
florescence). Proper curing reduces efflorescence residue.
/.IMITATION
The color effect of Davis 807 and 8084 in concrete can some times be
degraded from repeated wetting and drying. ALL concrete including colored
concrete benefits from being sealed against moisture exposure. Davis 807
and 8084 are more susceptible to water leaching, unlike other Davis Color
Concentrates. Davis 807 and 8084 are not recommended for use in air-
entrained concrete. Davis 860 should be used
in mr-entrained concrete or concrete exposed
to repeated wetting or drying.
ARCHITECTUHAL SPECIFICATION
The information on this brochure as well as
other information in our Spec-Data and Sweets
brochures can be directly incorporated into
architectural specifications regarding colored
concrete Our product call out would be: "Con-
crete should contain integral pure-color con-
centrate number manufactured by Davis
Colors at an addtition rate of pounds per
sack of cement and cured with Davis W-1000 Clear (or Color Seal II in a
matching color).
