Dear Mr. Sorrells,
Based on discussions during the preconstruction meeting concerning our recommendation for
the spread footing subgrade preparation, it is acceptable to install the spread footings directly on
top of a two foot thick layer of flexible base as long as the flexible base and the subgrade
directly below the flexible base has 95% minimum compaction. In-place field density tests can
verify the compaction of the subgrade at this elevation. During the moisture conditioning phase
of the building pad, the required compaction of the soil at this depth was to be a minimum of
93% at these locations.
Our original recommendations stated that the bottom of the flexible base needs to extend
through the moisture conditioned zone of the building pad, with a minimum thickness of 2 feet.
In some cases where the footings will be only 12 inches thick, this would require the flexible
base to be 2~ feet thick. This can be reduced to a 2 feet thick layer as long as the required
compaction, as stated above, has been met.
