Marchant Secures $1 Million in Transportation Funding for Coppell
Washington, DC - Today Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) secured $4.5 million in federal funds for Coppell
transportation projects upon the House passage of H.R. 3, the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users. The
bill provides $284 billion in funding for federal highway, transit, and road safety programs through the year 2009.
The measure designates $1 million for the construction of a four-lane concrete arterial with drainage improvements
oo Sandy Lake Road, from Denton Tap Road to North CoppeI1 Road. Upon its completion, the road will provide a
continuous four lane arterial from IH 35 in Carrollton to SH 121 in Coppell.
"This project will improve traffic flow and decrease travel time in the area," said Marchant, the only Republican
member of the House Transportation Committee from North Texas. "It should benefit the city a great deal."
Marchant also spoke on the House floor today in favor of an amendment to H.R. 3 regarding toll credit calculation.
States are given federal money as credit for the funds they contribute to transit projects. Current policy will not credit
states if a single dollar of federal funds is used toward a toll project. This amendment changes the toll credit
calculation to take into account the state level of financial investment in a toll project. It was originally introduced by
Marchant as a separate bill on March 3, but was later passed as an amendment to the larger highway funding
legislation.
"As states are laced with growing traffic congestion, aging transportation infrastructure, and increased demand upon
their limited transportation funding we must look to more innovative financing techniques to build needed
infrastructure and keep our country moving," said Marchant.
H.R. 3 seeks, to alleviate traffic congestion problems, improve driver safety, and correct inefficient highway projects.
It also provides for the creation of millions of new jobs for Americans in the transportation sector. The highway
funding bill allocates a total of over $16 billion in federal funds for Texas transportation projects alone.
"Addressing transportation problems in the Dallas/Fort Worth region has been a legislative priority of mine from day
one," said Marchant. "I am delighted that the Transportation Equity Act included such a large amount of funds for the
Metroplex. North Texans should know that this bill will go a long way to help with traffic and highway safety
concerns in mir area."
