CF-Cozby Library-CS 941004DATE: TO: FROM: RE: Also Library Furniture 8-5 -94 The original bid for library furnishings was for $208,002.78. This did not include the items to be purchased using the state contact, which are estimated to cost $32,000.00. We had three alternates: (1) custom coloring for the children's shelving, (2) two benches for the lobby and (3) a different chair for the children's public area. We had a balance of $10,240.81 with the addition of those items. At this time, approximately $7,000.00 of the remaining money is earmarked to pay the architect for the new design of the children's area.. As you know, after the original interior design proposal, we asked the architects to design a different, more appealing children's area. Also the city council suggested we complete the entire building, instead of only 23,000 square feet. Both these projects add to the cost. We do not have an exact figure on what the changes in the children's area will cost as far as the actual construction. Gary Sieb has been told that to finish the building, it will cost around $100,000 dollars. It needs to be determined how the unfinished space will be used. As you know, my preference would be that this space be used for storage of city documents. It is my understanding that several departments are renting space for storage of materials. If all departments were to use this space for storage, it would save the city money they are currently spending on rent. There would not have to be money spent on remodeling the area for offices now and then remodeling it back into a library. It also is a lot easier to move boxes than people. Another area of concern is the noise problem that may be created due to the fact that the temporary wall in the new facility does not reach the ceiling so sound would carry back and forth. Other concerns would be access to the other departments or organizations as well as the number of parking spaces needed. Until some of the above items have been determined, I cannot have a firm figure on the total outstanding costs involved with the library project. I do feel it is misleading to attribute all the costs for the project to the library if the space is being finished out for other uses. Obviously, we do want to make the best use of the space in the most cost effective manner. I will keep you apprised of any new developments. I would like to recommend that since this contingency money for construction is closely related to the furnishings, that these be combined into one tickler. Thank you for your consideration of this request. 10/4/94
