During my initial walk through of this project, I noted trees that would definitely have to come out and the trees we would attempt to save. There were approximately nine trees between Woodcrest and Allencrest which we were going to attempt to save. With this letter, I am including Sheet 48 of the construction plans which is my work copy when I walked the project. As can be seen, there were notes about moving the sidewalk to save trees near both Woodcrest and Allencrest. The construction plans in this area show that the existing grade 45 feet left of the center line would be very near the top of the curb grade for the construction of the project. However, to actually construct the roadway you have to remove approximately 1 foot, which constitutes the thickness of the paving and the thickness of the curb. Once that excavation was performed, we had our Leisure Services Department look at the trees to determine the feasibility of continuing to try to salvage the trees. It was their opinion (see attached memo) that at this point the trees would not survive due to the cutting around the root system and the future sidewalk As previously stated, those nine trees were not removed during the initial tree removal because of our hope that during actual construction they could be saved. But at this point, it is obvious that the trees will not survive long term, therefore they will be removed with the construction of the roadway. If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me at 972/304-3679. Sincerely, Kenneth M. Griffin, P.E. Park Planning and Landscape Manage SUBJECT: Trees Along Sandy Lake Road At the request of thc Engineering Departmem, a visit has been made to review a number of trees at the Sandy Lake construction site to determine the viability of the trees based on the proposed development in the area. The trees are located along the north side ofthe construction between Woodcrest and Trailwood Streets. The excavation required for the proposed expansion of Sandy Lake has certainly taken a toll on these trees. Almost h~lf of the root mass has been removed bom the trees causing the canopies to be extremely dehydrated. The plans for the project indicate a sidewalk in the immediate area of the trunk of the trees with little or no space for the trees to grow. It is also gaffs opinion that removing the trees to another location would only further stress the trees with no probable survival. With the above influences upon these trees it is doubtful they have much chance of surviving. It is recommended the trees im removed, as they have become unsightly and disturbing to some residents. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact me. BIVbr John and Collette Dockery 103 Allencrest Lane Coppell, Texas 75019 August 30, 1999 Mr. Ken Griffin Director of Engineering City of Coppell 255 Parkway Blvd. Coppell, Texas 75019 I live on the comer of Allencrest and Sandy Lake and have the luxury of a front row seat for the Sandy Lake Road construction project. My concern in writing to you today is for the trees that are on the side of the brick wall which borders my yard. The dirt on one side of these trees has been removed and the roots have been left exposed, additionally there is no water source to irrigate them. In fact one of the trees has already died. I have been ranning water over the fence to them but this may all be in vain as the rumors around the neighborhood are that these trees will probably die and/or be removed because there is no room for them and the sidewalk. My husband and I visited with you in your office and discussed the road construction some time ago. During this visit, you showed us plans and emphasized that landscaping would be a prime consideration for this project. I am disappointed to hear that these existing trees will not be there when the project is complete. These are very nice, healthy trees and I would like for them to stay. Please call or write to me to let me know what is in the plans for these trees. It is important to me.
